Mark Dresser and the new avant-garde
As heard on Dresser's "Eye'll Be Seeing You" (Knitting Factory), his music ranges from atonal bass squeaks atop Cecil Taylor-like piano chord clusters to poignant folk-like melodies for trio of bowed bass, clarinet and piano to eerie sound effects to funereal organ lines to breezy, Sonny Rollins-like calypso.
Rather, it's the utter logic of the approach, the ease with which the composer melds the styles together, to the point where style or genre disappear, and all that's left are melody, texture and narrative statement in the overall service of mood, form and beauty.
Dresser, like Zorn, Coleman, and other like-minded avant-gardists, including Frank London ("The Debt"), Phillip Johnston ("Music for Films") and Gary Lucas ("The Golem"), is drawn to the challenge of scoring improvisational music for film precisely for the creative tension imposed by the film's narrative structure.

Mark Dresser has an experimentalist's imagination and a realist's restraint.
These days, Dresser, who appears at Webster University with his trio (Denman Maroney on "hyperpiano" -- we have no idea, either -- and Matthias Ziegler on multiple flutes), creates music that exists in a netherworld; it's not your father's jazz, nor his classical or rock, music.
He's as likely to scrape his bass with a bow or strum it as he is to pluck it, and he seems just as happy making music in an open, unstructured landscape as he is within the relatively tight constraints of post-bop.

As “Protone” begins, Ibarra swiftly and smoothly lays a rhythm beneath Dresser’s playing, the first of many instances in which the level of unspoken communication between Ibarra and Dresser seems so clear and seamless that it’s hard to believe that the two haven’t spent decades on stage together.
Both are consistently versatile, especially Dresser, who seems to always find a new way in which to coax sounds from his instrument, but the abundance of variety in the techniques of each player rarely leads to mixed signals or tangents in opposite directions.
Dresser, throughout, never seems to use the same voice twice, and, like a master linguist, is an expert in any of the languages he chooses to use, whether bowing long, tender phrases, tapping out elastic shuffles on his instrument’s neck, or plucking a catchy, toe-tapping beat.

Mark Dresser/Denman Maroney | Time Changes
The title refers to the trio’s flexible yet constructed compositions, most notably Dresser’s “Aperitivo,” which, according to Dresser, is based on a blues form but is rendered almost unrecognizable through his and Maroney’s harmonic alterations, not to mention a constantly fluctuating tempo that keeps the listener on his or her toes throughout.
It is, in fact, Maroney and Dresser’s expansion of their respective instruments’ sonic possibilities that takes the programme of Dresser and Maroney originals, all based on complex and precisely structured forms—with the exception of two free improvisations—and opens them up to greater breath and breadth.
When Dresser recently played a series of duets in Ottawa, Canada with fellow bassist John Geggie, his ability to combine improvisational élan with finely detailed composition was in clear evidence.
