  Oscar 2000 - Foreign Films
Johnson has served on the nominating committee for about 10 years, but this is his first stint at the top of the heap.
Johnson's producing career has, in some ways, mirrored his affinity for foreign films, most of which, it seems, rely strongly on character-driven narratives as opposed to modern Hollywood's typical reliance on action.
Johnson's move from film scholarship to Hollywood producer may not be quite as dramatic as, say, Alain Robbe-Grillet arriving in Hollywood to pen the script for the next Die Hard sequel, but it does bode well for foreign films in America.

Lycos Movies - Biography - Mark Johnson
Although executive producers Jon Peters and Peter Guber grabbed an Oscar the night "Rain Man" (1988) won Best Picture honors and posed for a widely-circulated picture, the real winner of the statuette was the film's producer Mark Johnson, longtime collaborator of its director Barry Levinson.
Although the self-effacing Johnson does not attribute any of the artistic achievement of these films (including "The Natural" 1984, "Tin Men" 1987, "Avalon" 1990, and "Bugsy" 1991) to his efforts, he clearly showed a sensitive and supportive talent for opening creative spaces for Levinson, his actors and crew.
Among the numerous projects Johnson has in various stages of development are the TV pilot "Falcone", based on the same material that was the basis for "Donnie Brasco", and a screen version of Nicholas Sparks' best-seller "The Notebook" (lensed 1999).

Johnson's presentation was part of the Darden 50th Anniversary Speaker Series, co-sponsored by The Virginia Film Festival and the Darden Media, Entertainment and Sports Club.
In making Chronicles of Narnia, which was released in December 2005, Johnson said for the first time in his career he felt a responsibility "to get it right" for the millions of readers who loved C.S. Lewis' books, on which the film and its sequels are based.
Rights to make film adaptations of the book (first published in 1949) had been kicking around Hollywood for years, he said, noting in an aside that some of his film projects had consumed a dozen years before they were finally made.

The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of films produced by Mark Johnson, based on the series of novels, The Chronicles of Narnia, written by C.S. Lewis in the 1950s.
The first film, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, was released in December 2005.
Lewis never sold the film rights to the entire Narnia series, being skeptical that any cinematic adaptation could render the more fantastical elements and characters of the story realistically (he reportedly despised the television adaptations of the books that were made during his lifetime).
