  Kac biography
Mark Kac's father was an academic with a degree in philosophy from the University of Leipzig and a degree from Moscow in history and philology.
Kac then tried to go to the United States, helped by Steinhaus who was not only his teacher but also by this time his friend.
Kac served at Cornell as an instructor from 1939 to 1943 (the year he became a US citizen), assistant professor from 1943 to 1947 when he was promoted to full professor.

Wired 9.04: I Love My Glow Bunny
Kac (pronounced Katz) was going to create a small living room in one corner of the show and demonstrate what it would be like to have a green-glowing rabbit as a pet.
Kac says sure, and stands to one side, explaining where he's from and what he's doing, and that this is the transgenic rabbit he created and wants to take home.
Kac said there was no question that he had proposed such a project as early as 1998, and that Bec had told him it was on course in 1999.

Mark Kac pioneered the mathematical theory of stochastic processes.
Mark was renowned for simple questions with profound answers -- such as, "Can one hear the shape of a drum?" -- whose answers require deep mathematics and have significant physical applications.
Mark generously gave his time, advice, and energy to CNLS even though privately he complained that nonlinear studies is not a proper definition of a scientific endeavor, any more than non-elephant zoology is. The Kac Memorial Lectures provide us a yearly opportunity to celebrate his encouragement, wisdom and charm.

Following a suggestion by P.W. Kasteleyn, one of the founding pathers of statistical physics in the Netherlands, the seminar was named after Mark Kac in 1985.

Ivars Peterson's MathLand: Drums that sound alike
Physicists and mathematicians have long recognized that the shape of the boundary enclosing a membrane plays a crucial role in determining the membrane's spectrum of normal-mode vibrations.
In 1966, mathematician Mark Kac, then at Rockefeller University in New York City, focused attention on the opposite question.
Kac asked whether knowledge of a drum's normal-mode vibrations is sufficient for unambiguously inferring its geometric shape.

Kac introduced him to the problem of formulating correctly an equation describing dissipative evolution in quantum mechanics.
Together with his graduate student P.N.M. Sisson, he proved in 1974 that an Atiyah-Singer Index can be associated with the correlation kernel in the two-dimensional Ising model; the index jumps from zero to one as the temperature passes through the critical point.
In 1970, Kac introduced him to the problem of formulating correctly the mathematics underlying the Bose-Einstein phase-transition.

Carolyn is very well known for working on a question first posed by Mark Kac, can you hear the shape of a drum?" A drum essentially makes sound because of a membrane (the part one beats on) that is stretched across some frame.
Kac began wandering whether the normal-mode vibrations was sufficient enough to determine a drum’s shape, hence the question can one hear the shape of a drum.
It had been known that one could "hear" the area and perimeter of a drum and in 1991, Carolyn Gordon, David Webb, and Scott Wolpert proved that the answer to Kac’s question is now and different shaped drums can make the same sound.

In 1966, Mark Kac popularized the question, ``Can one hear the shape of a drum?'' Viewing a drumhead as a plane domain, the frequencies produced when the drum vibrates correspond to the collection of eigenvalues of the Laplace operator acting on smooth functions.
Thus the question actually posed by Kac is: ``Does the spectrum of a plane domain determine its shape?'' Only recently has this question been answered in the negative.
The marked length spectrum is similar, but also records the free homotopy classes of loops in which the geodesics occur.
