Mark Lenard (October 15, 1924–November 22, 1996) was an American actor, primarily in television.
Lenard was also known for the role of Aaron Stempel in Here Come the Brides and of the hostile gorilla Urko in the television series Planet of the Apes.
In 1996, Lenard died of multiple myeloma in New York City at age 72.

The Klingon dialogue in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" was devised by James Doohan and spoken by Mark Lenard, who, of course, played the Klingon commander in that film.
My understanding is that Doohan recorded the dialogue on tape and Lenard then listened to the tape and wrote down what he heard in a way that would help him learn the lines.
It wasn't until after I had done this and after about half of the lines of Klingon were filmed for "Star Trek III" that I met Mark Lenard and he told me the story of how the phrases he uttered came into being.

The Praxis Foundation presented a $10,217 check Wednesday to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation in honor of actor Mark Lenard, who portrayed Vulcan ambassador Sarek, Mr Spock’s father, in both the "Star Trek" TV series and several of its movie versions.
Lenard, who died in November 1996, supported juvenile diabetes charities for more than 30 years because his daughter Cathy has had diabetes since age 2.
It honored Lenard by donating money raised by its Memorial Day weekend science fiction convention at Hidden Valley Four Seasons Resort in Somerset County.

In this instance it is the scene where the intrepid crew come across their first instance of 'road rage' in 1980's San Francisco.
In particular the scene where the probe and the whales confer in their unknown form of language was made all the more difficult as there were no visual effects of either the probe or the whales.
Easily and deservedly the most successful Star trek movie of all and a science fiction classic with an entertaining and in some ways provocative story that is as entertaining and relevant today as it was almost 20 years ago.
