The film's visuals and sounds contribute to a movie in which the feeling of not knowing and the fear engendered by that are the keys in how the film is composed.
In that same team planning strategy, Pellington gave everyone in the cast and crew his "manifesto," his pre-shoot written version of what he believed the film should be.
Pellington's affinity for music and the story's eerie elements led him to hire Frenchman Claude LeTissier as the sound designer on the picture, even before he hired Murphy.

Pellington shifts gears in the second half, however, and for awhile, it seems that the film has simultaneously sunk into a cheap, high-octane brand of Hollywood entertainment and undermined its own point.
Pellington also reminds us that we are so quick to find scapegoats to blame because it gives us a sense of relief, a feeling that all is once again right with the world, and that acts of terrorism can only be carried out by 'others' not by people like us.
Director Mark Pellington creates an intense, riveting film that does not skip a beat--it unravels from the very start with the eerie introduction and the truth is revealed exceptionally well with a superb, twisted finale.

It was Pellington's unique directorial style in Going All The Way, based on Dan Wakefield's novel and co-starring Ben Affleck and Jeremy Davies, that prompted the ARLINGTON ROAD producers to reteam with him on the thriller.
The New York-based Pellington is probably best known for his critically acclaimed, groundbreaking work in television with his creation of Buzz, a 13-part global series of a non-linear collage program he developed in partnership with MTV Europe producer/director Jon Klein.
Pellington also created the five-part PBS series The United States of Poetry, a journey through the end of the century by 72 poets.

Mark Pellington (Arlington Road) directed the film, written by Richard Hatem, based on paranormal journalist John Keel's book of the same name, about events surrounding the 1967 collapse of the Silver Bridge in Pt.
And Mark Pellington came in and did his version, kind of pulling things from all these different drafts that had been done.

Hollywood Gothique: Mark Pellington on directing The Mothman Prophecies - Q&A
In some inexplicable fashion, Klein finds himself two years later in the small town of Point Pleasant, West Virginia, where there has been a rash of sightings of an elusive, frightening figure, sketches of which bear a startling similarity to drawings made by Klein's wife just before she died in the hospital.
The film was directed by Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), who appeared after a 2002 screening of the film in Hollywood and made the following comments on the subject of translating the story to the screen:
MARK PELLINGTON: I'd say [the film was] 'inspired by true events.' John Keel wrote a book in the mid-'70s called The Mothman Prophecies, which was really a chronicle of these events.

 Analysis of Mark Pellington
Compared to more experienced movie directors with ten or more movies under their belts, Mark Pellington is fairly new to the game.
Having directed many TV sitcoms and dramas in the past, it makes scenes that the next step would be to direct movies for “the big screen.” However natural it seems to go beyond TV to movie directing, not every visionary can pull it off.
Pellington’s latest movie, named “The Mothman Prophesies,” is based off of a true story.

In 1967, residents of a small town were plagued by strange incidents and sightings of a moth-like man, and it’s through the new film “The Mothman Prophecies” that documentation, streaming from a 1975 book by John Keel, take form.
The events of the film are cited as occuring in 1967 — but Pellington felt it was a universal story that could be adjustable to any year.
But Pellington admits his films have never made enough money to garner interest in a sequel.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Mark Pellington - 2002 - Mothman Prophecies, The Movies Review
Director Mark Pellington's previous feature film, 1999's Arlington Road, was a thriller that was much better than it had any right to be.
Perhaps tellingly, Pellington cuts quickly from this image to a close-up of Gere; the film hints that what an individual sees when he or she glimpses the Mothman is based on one's own circumstances and perception.
Finally, it's Pellington's talent for surrealism, as mentioned at the beginning of this review, which ties all these elements together and elevates Mothman to the success that it is. In conjunction with cinematographer Fred Murphy, he creates a dizzying, frightening mood and sustains it for the entire film.

In THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, scriptwriter Richard Hatem and director Mark Pellington play upon the strange events that reportedly occurred in Point Pleasant in the mid-1960s.
Pellington gets fine performances from Gere, Linney, Patton, Alan Bates as a paranormal investigator, and Debra Messing--who is striking in the too-small role of Klein's wife--before he produces a spectacular final sequence.
Pellington uses a lot of clever camera trickery (including numerous perspective shots, intriguing transitions, and grainy video images) to give the film a stylish feel.

The answers are dependent upon how big a fan you are of the movie or its director, Mark Pellington, but I can offer that while the SE's supplementary material is intriguing, the film's transfer exhibits no technical improvements on that of the pre-existing disc.
There's a great moment where Pellington kicks his office door after the studio shaves $2M from his budget, but he's such an ostentatious personality here it's difficult to muster sympathy for him as the bean counters close in.

SPLICEDwire | "The Mothman Prophecies" review (2002) Mark Pellington, Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Will Patton, Debra ...
By making a big deal out of the fact that his supernatural chiller "The Mothman Prophecies" is based -- however loosely -- on true events, director Mark Pellington seem to be hoping the picture's vagueness and creative liberties might come under less scrutiny.
But Pellington gives "Mothman" an irresistibly uncanny ambience that goes a long way toward keeping the picture compelling, just as he did in the 1998 psychological terrorist thriller "Arlington Road."
Couldn't Pellington come up with a better excuse for a minor character to be in the finale than to place her in a bridal shop, trying on wedding dresses at 6pm on Christmas eve?

Drawn out as a feature length movie, Mark Pellington’s one-trick pony film simply falls flat and stretches believability with a series of contrivances that would work far better contracted to the smaller screen in a 30-minute time span.
But Pellington tricks us into watching a feature length “drama” by ingenious casting, highlighted with the always watchable Jeff Bridges as Michael Faraday and enjoyable Tim Robbins as Oliver Lang.
Unfortunately, Pellington is no Hitchcock, capable of transforming a mediocre script into suspenseful and gripping cinema.
