  Interview - Epic proportions // Xbox 360 /// Eurogamer
Rein confirms that Unreal Engine 3 is Epic's most commercially successful engine to date, something which he believes is mainly down to the fact that it enables developers to create games faster and more cheaply.
Rein tells us that he was showing a journalist round Epic's North Carolina headquarters recently, explaining how one of the options for new employees will be working on research projects into the next-generation of gaming.
Rein points out that what Rockstar achieved with the Grand Theft Auto games on PS2 couldn't have been achieved if they were developing for PlayStation 1, and that it was only possible due to a huge leap forward in graphics technology.

Mark Rein: Well, one thing we've learned from working with both companies is that they both have a clear love of games, they both want to have a great consumer entertainment product, technologically they both have their various strengths, and I guess weaknesses but we don't see a lot of weaknesses in these consoles.
Mark Rein: Well, you know, we've been working with Xbox Live for a long time now, and it works really well.
Mark Rein: Well, I think what you're really seeing is just the fact that our engine now fits consoles really well.

Mark Rein: Yeah, I don't know which ones for sure; I'm not really up on what classic maps we're bringing back, but the maps are just beautiful.
Mark Rein: Well, part of the problem is we have a kind of limited arsenal obviously and we have to keep bringing back the weapons people really, really love and we have to improve on them as well.
Mark Rein: Well obviously Unreal Engine 3 is the basis for UT2007; it has by far the best quality tools we've ever had, the most productive set of tools we've ever had and more importantly, the most flexible set of tools we've ever had.

Kill Ten Rats » Blog Archive » Is Mark Rein Right?
After reading a few of Mark’s comments posted on gamasutra.com about the episodic issue, and an interview with him posted on gamesindustry.biz where he claims that next-generation development costs have been overstated by larger publishers, I am inclined to agree with Mark.
Mark commented that it is much more difficult to brand, market, and distribute a game based on episodic release, and I think he is right.
I should say though, that there are exceptions to the rule…episodic content may very well work for some properties, but Rein’s point (and I concur) is that the model in general is “broken”…it sounds good on paper (like in-game advertising) but in practice isn’t very stable or good for game developers and consumers.

'PC retail space is a complete mess' - Rein // GamesIndustry.biz
Outspoken Epic Games VP Mark Rein has launched a scathing attack on the representation of PC games at US retail - but believes a "renaissance" of the sector is coming thanks to Microsoft's Games For Windows branding initiative and the arrival of its Vista operating system.
And he argues that this problem is compounded by the advent of Intel integrated graphics in consumer laptops, incapable of playing the latest games -a topic on which he recently attacked the technology giant over, accusing it of "killing" the PC games market.
But Rein was full of praise for Microsoft, backing the Redmond giant to effect a turnaround in the platform's fortunes thanks to the heavy investment it is making in it.

VE3D Boards - Mark Rein No Likey Episodic Content
Our buddy Mark Rein from Epic is making some friends across the big pond at the Develop conference in Brighton by sharing his views on episodic gaming:
I can see how episodic gaming differs from regular games when it comes to marketing, and it's definitely worth consideration, but Rein's assertion that episodic games "will inevitably be using a lot of recycled content, walking through the same environments and shooting the same enemies with the same weapons" is bullshit.
It sounds like Mark Rein was addressing the realities of the business, while the hecklers were addressing the way they'd like to see it work.
