 | | Charged with rebuilding and re-imagining the Coming Out Project, Shields’ early goal for the project is to empower gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and straight supportive people to come out for the first time, and also to encourage everyone who supports GLBT equality to speak openly about it in their daily lives. |
 | | Shields previously served HRC as deputy director of media relations, representing HRC in the national print and broadcast press, designing and implementing communications plans, writing speeches and helping to lead the communications department through a variety of public issues. |
 | | Shields began his career as the media relations specialist for the American Red Cross Badger-Hawkeye Blood Services Region, headquartered in Madison, Wis. During his two years at the ARC, he helped guide regional response to issues including labor disputes, blood shortages and the Sept. 11 attacks. |
