AFI was formed in 1991 by Davey Havok (vocals), Mark Stopholese (guitar), Vic Chalker (bass) and Adam Carson (drums) in Ukiah, California as a four-piece hardcore punk outfit.
Eventually, guitarist Mark Stopholese was replaced by Jade Puget, who at the time was in the band Loose Change.
Adam used his father's drum kit, Davey (a member of the school choir) exhibited talent as a singer, and they were joined by guitarist Mark Stopholese.

AFI (A Fire Inside) is an American punk rock band, formed in 1991 by Davey Havok (vocals), Markus Stopholese (guitar), Geoff Kresge (bass) and Adam Carson (drums) in Ukiah, California.
After the recording of the A Fire Inside EP in 1998, Mark left the band to be replaced by guitarist Jade Puget who was critical in forming the bands new sound over the following albums.
Following on from the new gothic influenced approach they had taken on the afformention A Fire Inside EP (released on Adeline records) the band recorded their Black Sails in the Sunset (Nitro 1998) album on which their gothic approach was fully apparent, especially in the lyrics of Davey Havok.

The game with replacing band members was still not over, so Mark was replaced with Jade Puget (who earlier had some guest appearances on stage with AFI) for the next album ‘Black Sails in the Sunset’ — which was a great turning point for the members in AFI.
Again we have waited three years for a new album, but the waiting is over soon, as the seventh full-length album ‘Decemberunderground’ is released june sixth 2006.

The new lineup recorded an EP titled A Fire Inside in 1998, and issued a full-length album in 1999, Black Sails in the Sunset.

With their landmark album Black Sails In The Sunset (1999), the band started exploring much darker, a little more metal-influenced music, although it was still really fast.
A lot of that had to do with the departure of original guitarist Mark Stopholese, who had been replaced by much more sonically diverse Jade Puget.
Davey Havoc really perfected his soaring scream-sing style around this time too, sounding like the bastard child of Glenn Danzig in the Misfits days.
