Mark Tobey (December 11, 1890 - April 24, 1976) was an abstract American painter.
Tobey held his first solo exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum in 1935.
Mark Tobey's work can be found in most major museums in the US and internationally, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Tate Gallery in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.

Tobey spent a month in a Zen monastery outside Kyoto in 1934; the following year he began his “white writing” paintings, which were shown for the first time at the Willard Gallery, New York, in 1944.

Tobey is of course most famous for his creation of so-called "white writing" - an overlay of white or light-colored calligraphic symbols on an abstract field which is often itself composed of thousands of small and interwoven brush strokes.
