Turner, a professor of English with a passion for cognitive studies, proposes new and intriguing interpretations of the workings of the mind and the evolution of language and grammar.
Turner illustrates his definition of the parable--stories with an associative purpose--as the most basic habit of mind in discussions of the tales of Shahrazad and the novels of Proust, but he also dissects such subtle properties of parable as its illumination of space and time.
Turner ranges from the tools of modern linguistics and classical rhetoric to the recent work of neuroscientists to literary masterpieces by Homer, Dante, Shakespeare, and Proust, to explain how story and projection--and their powerful combination in parable--are fundamental to everyday thought.

MARK TURNER: First of all, it was my understanding, whether it is true or not, that his person as a musician and his ideology about music and living, which I was really drawn to and then how it expressed itself in music.
MARK TURNER: Well, actually, I would say, out of the people that I know, I would say that is fairly most of the people out there, really.

My previous encounter with Mark Turner as a leader was his self-titled 1998 major-label debut, an auspicious and engaging disc that showcased a tenor style that borrowed equally from Coltrane and Warne Marsh.
Turner's playing is much more "personal" than on the Warner debut--it's much further from his sources now, and his voice is unmistakable; and yet the warmth and emotional directness of the early album is strikingly absent.
Mark blasted out in a high point when he evokes from a lyrical chant progressively to the Coltranish screams, the emotional involvement evolved into a vehicle for personal spirituality and gratitude.

As on his eponymous debut, tenor saxophonist Mark Turner takes his sophomore release into and beyond the territory that was once almost exclusively associated with the likes of pianist Lennie Tristano and alto saxist Lee Konitz.
Turner also cues up a touching Duke Pearson ballad, "You Know I Care," but his take on the Beatles tune "He Said, She Said" smacks too much of a rote move.
Mark Turner is a welcomed addition to great tenor jazz players. His music is challenging yet easy to listen to.

Turner's favourite Coltrane period seems to be the Atlantics--here there's a Victor Lewis composition that harks back to "Giant Steps" plus Coltrane's "26-2", a "Confirmation" variant from the _Coltrane's Sound_ sessions that like "Giant Steps" uses movement in thirds.
I've not given it quite top marks, as Turner's not a strongly characterized player, perhaps--he does excellent things with an well-absorbed array of influences, but I'm not sure I'd be able to pick him out of a lineup with Chris Potter, Chris Cheek, Seamus Blake and Joshua Redman in it.
This Cd has all that and Mark Turner is a talented and very good musician, but as technically solid as this recording is, It did not evoke any emotion from me,nor did it feel soulful and passionate.

Although not explained by historical change, material settings, and social and cultural practices, cognition is always embedded in them, and since specific human actions and thoughts inseparably combine cognition and culture, it is appropriate to look for an academic integration of cognitive studies and cultural studies.
Cognitivists have often taken up the challenges of cultural and historical studies — as when Sweetser analyzes the concept of lie in different cultures, or Turner analyzes the historical changes in connotations of kinship terms used metaphorically in European literature.
Cognitive poetics and culture studies need to take up the challenges each poses to the other.
