Waid's initial success on Flash was acknowledged by DCs competitor Marvel Comics when Marvel editors Matt Idelson and Mark Gruenwald hired him as Gruenwald's successor as writer on Captain America.

Mark Waid is perhaps best-known right now for his mini-series Kingdom Come, a sort of dark look at the future of the DC universe, gorgeously painted by Alex Ross.
Mark Waid: Yeah, pretty much it is and there's all kinds of tribes there and all sorts of warring races and it's a matter of keeping peace and keeping people from being eaten by brontosauruses and that kind of thing.
Mark Waid: No, the point of going to New York was to track something down, but when he's there he's kind of digging the fact that, first off, in that sort of post-Heroes Reborn reborn when the Avengers and FF aren't around, New York is actually sort of crazy for super heroes.

COMICON.com: Boy, you should hear Mark Waid!
Waid has always done some pretty good stuff, but after reading this article it kind of makes me regret even more that I don't have access to any of his recent work.
Waid's "beef" comes from a tendency for some regulars on those newsgroups to behave in manners which would be completely unacceptable in the real world--for example, saying deliberatly hurtful things about a creator as a person just because they don't like their work.
Waid is one helluva writer and from this article, a pretty cool guy who really cares about comics.

I had hoped, and probably even expected to be able to take some of the storytelling techniques I had developed over to the JLA with me, always knowing, of course, that it was a different book to THE AUTHORITY, but it proved to be a difficult fit.
Mark Waid's stories were far more intimate in their approach than I had hereto realized and it took a period of adjustment for both of us as we had very different approaches to storytelling.
It wasn't the differences in approach between myself and Mark Waid, or for that matter myself and Dan Rasplar that were contributing factors to the limitations and eventual disappointment with my work.

Bill called up Mark and asked him personally to steer the book towards a new vision and Mark made it clear that it wasn't a direction that he felt he wanted to write in or was comfortable with.
I'm in no way saying that Mark is misleading the fans, only that he may be mixing up stories he's heard and judging the new direction on what was a very initial pitch that was circulated over a month ago.

This tale, despite the fact that it appears under a different writer in a different run on the title, was almost certainly the inspiration for Mark Waid's excellent "Tower of Babel"; in which two "normal" human beings become the most dangerous adversaries the near-gods of the JLA have ever faced.
Waid's writing is as character focussed as ever and it is the subtle interplay between the characters both in the foreground and background of the story that shows his ability as a writer to take characters to places where we have rarely seen them before.
Waid provides a well-reasoned and pragmatic discourse on behalf of Batman when he explains why safeguards were needed should the JLA ever "go bad".
