Markeaton Hall and some of its gardens were given to the Corporation in 1929, the remaining parkland was bought in 1930.
Markeaton Hall was demolished in 1964 and replaced by a landscaped terrace.
Markeaton Park is often used as a venue for the annual Bonfire and Fireworks display, as it is in a good location for people to visit.

Markeaton Park is the most used leisure facility in the city and is popular with children, adults and families.
Markeaton Park was originally part of the Markeaton Hall Estate, owned by the Mundy family from 1516.
In 1929, the Hall and twenty acres of its gardens were given to the Corporation by the Reverend Clarke Maxwell who had inherited the estate from the late Mrs Mundy, on condition that the whole area would be used as a public park and that the mansion would be maintained for some municipal use.

Markeaton Estate was very extensive and dominated the north–west side of Derby, from 1086 to the early part of the 20th century.
In 1516, the manor of Markeaton, together with Mackworth and Allestree came into the hands of John Mundy, a goldsmith, who six years later became the Lord Mayor of London and was knighted in 1529.
The last Mundy to live at Markeaton was Francis Noel who died in 1903, and on the death of his wife 26 years later, the estate passed to the Rev William Clarke-Maxwell.

Markeaton Hall was sadly demolished in the 1960's.
Here is a letter from Mrs Emily Mundy dated 1st July 1924 to the tenant farmers Bryer which shows her thoughts/intentions to give what is now known as the Mundy Play area to the Derby City for the children to continue to use as a play area.
MARKEATON anciently belonged to the earls of Chester, and came through the Touchets to the Munday family.

About 75km of open watercourses and 25km of culverted streams feed the Markeaton and Mackworth brooks, which converge on Derby’s north western fringes, 3km upstream of their junction with the Roiver Derwent in the city centre.
As part of the 1930s flood control works, stilling ponds were excavated on the Markeaton and Mackworth brooks about 100m upstream of their confluence.
Now, water is overtopping the flat crested weirs into Markeaton brook and on to the city instead of being diverted into the Northern culvert.

Amongst other land changes, this Act of Enclosure required what was known s ‘Common land’ to be enclosed and therefore the local farmers lost the right to graze their animals on this common land.
Francis Noel Clark Mundy, Lord of Markeaton Manor, and Sacheverell Pole, both of whom were original petitioners for the Act of Enclosure in 1763, purchased the land jointly, and paid £110 duty on the purchase, to the auctioneer, a Mr Shaw.
However before Mundy moved into the house he decided to extend and probably update the house to a better class of residence in all probability to make it worthy of a person of his standing.
