Market Harborough was founded in the 12th century as a market town to provide a market to boost the economy of the surrounding area.

Taken probably just after the livestock market was moved to this location in 1903, it clearly shows the holding pens on the left, and the auctioneer's building on the right.
Originally, it was used as the market offices, where the farmers 'settled' their accounts.
More recently the building housed the Radio Cafe, and for a while, was also the home of The Big Dial Co Radio Station, which was one of several FM radio stations to have a temporary license to broadcast locally.

After this time, covered stalls would be erected each Tuesday and Thursday to form Harborough's Retail Market, until 1938 when the first market hall was erected off Northampton Road.
Today, it is only the newly formed Farmer's Market each first Thursday in the month that sees the stalls set out around the square once more.
