WILLIAM MONTAGU, sth duke of Manchester (1768-1843), second son of the preceding, was educated at Harrow, and having become a colonel in the army in 1794, was appointed governor of Jamaica in 1808.
Manchester was originally a part of the township of Hartford, and later a part of the township of East Hartford.
The parliamentary and municipal boroughs of Manchester are not conterminous.

STOCKS STREET Cheetham is hardly the most picturesque of locations, with its deserted street corners, commercial properties and empty lots, but in the 19th century it was a residential street, part of the thriving township of Cheetham with its strongly Jewish character.
The only element of the old Manchester to survive is this corner building, wedge-shaped to fit the street line with a brick and tile exterior and cast iron fire escapes.

On the west side of Manchester, the estate of the de Trafford family had been sold for industrial development after the opening of the Manchester Ship Canal in 1894, and the Trafford Park Estates Company laid down a tramway to be operated by the British Gas Traction Company from 1897.
The lightly used routes in southern Manchester from Palatine Road to Cheadle and Northenden, and Hulme to Chorlton-cum-Hardy, were still being operated by horse buses in 1905, and in February the General Manager of the Manchester Corporation Tramways recommended that an experiment be made with motor buses on these services.
In Manchester plans were made for the replacement of all the trams by motor buses, but a very determined electric traction “lobby” in the City Council were successful in getting authority for the introduction of trolleybuses.

Duerr, a member of the Manchester Corn Exchange, installed the most up to date, scientific and hygienic equipment and was known for the generous wages paid to his employees.
His greatest legacy is the Watts Warehouse on Portland Street, which opened at a cost of £100,000 in March 1858, (now the Britannia Hotel).

The gang attacked two Irish teenagers on Market Street last November, and three other men who came to their aid.
After a chase from police officers, two of the men were arrested on the night, and the other four were identified from CCTV camera footage.
Speaking after the sentences were handed out, Pc David Henshall from Greater Manchester Police said: "This was a vicious and senseless attack, but shows the value of the city's CCTV system.

Rolling ever onward he took the company to market in 1892 where it was named Brooke Bond and Company Ltd. It was at this point Arthur moved the company to a more wholesale type form having taken on large premises.
However the war meant warehousing in Manchester was bought and staff were quickly employed.
Actually to say this was an erosion is not really to do the CWS justice as really they were clawing back the ground they had lost to Brooke Bond in the first place.
