Market price - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Market price is an economic concept with commonplace familiarity; it is the price that a good or service is offered at, or will fetch, in the marketplace; it is of interest mainly in the study of microeconomics.
Market price is one of a number of ways of establishing the monetary value of a transaction; there are others, such as historical cost; the resource cost of the good or service; the discounted present value, Economic value, and others.
In classical economics, the market price of a good or service is established in relation with demand, and in inverse relation with supply, which is to say the market price decreases as supply increases; increases as supply decreases; increases as demand increases; and decreases as demand decreases.

Prices for 500-600 pound feeder steers are higher in the spring with a peak in April because few lightweight feeder cattle are sold and cattle to graze through the summer months are in greater demand (Figure 3).
Peak prices for feeder pigs occurred in the spring, with anticipation of higher prices for market hogs in the summer (Figure 8).
Prices declined into the summer months with expectations of lower fall prices for market hogs and reached seasonal lows in October and November in anticipation of seasonally low prices for market hogs in the spring.

 Market Price Method
Market price represents the value of an additional unit of that good or service, assuming the good is sold through a perfectly competitive market (that is, a market where there is full information, identical products being sold and no taxes or subsidies).
The market price method reflects an individual's willingness to pay for costs and benefits of goods that are bought and sold in markets, such as fish, timber, or fuel wood.
Market data may only be available for a limited number of goods and services provided by an ecological resource and may not reflect the value of all productive uses of a resource.

Jewish Law - Articles ("Consumer Protection: Price Fraud")
The standard case of fraud in the Talmud is price fraud (ona'a), where a disparity exists between the price received for the object and the market price.
The correct price is officially set by the authorities or is the prevailing price in the marketplace, and one of the sides to the transaction is not aware that he is paying more or receiving less than that price.
The laws of ona'a apply on the basis of the market price and are not in themselves an intervention in the free market, since even in a free market, the requirement of fairness is legitimate.

The Straight Dope: How is the market price established for crude oil?
Because of this, the price of oil is sensitive to how traders think the world will look one month, six months, or even years in the future.
Even if the price of oil at the wellhead is flat, things like refinery costs, excise tax changes, and transportation problems (e.g., pits in the pipeline) can raise prices at the pump.
When the price of crude spikes, the filling-station owner knows the wholesale price he pays for gas will soon jump, so it's not unreasonable for him to salt away a couple bucks by hiking the pump price now.

Price Controls in the Energy Market
A much-supported notion that the market may fail to achieve an efficient outcome is that suppliers have some degree of market power and have the ability to influence the market price of electricity.
In reality, the market structure for electricity is much more complex, but this rationale is based on the notion that there is a significant degree of market power held by producers and that price controls will increase the amount of power produced.
Another argument favoring the use of temporary price caps illustrates that if they are set at levels allowing reasonable profits, then certainly this type of mitigation will be a necessary part of the broader reform of imperfect markets.

 Price Controls Can Be Deadly
The artificially low price has a twofold effect: it causes supplies to be withheld from the market and it induces people to consume more than they ordinarily would.
Not only because of the long lines but also because a fl-market price, which is the true free-market price, has formed in response to the government-set price.
In Iraq, simply lifting the price controls would not solve the problem because the central planners would still be faced with the problem of constantly guessing what the free-market price should be in all the government-owned gas stations.
