Markham was first surveyed as a township in 1793 by William Berczy (Johann Albrecht Ulrich Moll 1744-1813), first settled in 1794 and incorporated as a town in 1972.

 William Markham
Markham sailed for Boston soon after obtaining his commission and made his way thence to New York, where he exhibited his credentials and received from the acting governor a letter to the local officials on the Delaware, notifying them of the transfer of authority.
Markham was chosen a mere-bet of the council, and in the following summer went to England to represent the proprietor in the controversy with Lord Baltimore, which was brought before the lords in council, but was not arranged till after Penn's death, and not finally settled till the drawing of Mason and Dixon's line.

Council Member Foy noted that the Quick Take authority that the TTA was requesting was the same as cities have under the statutes.  He asked Town Attorney Ralph Karpinos to help the Council understand what the Town has that might be similar.  Noting that he did not have the statute in front of him, Mr.
Council Member Bill Strom commented that Eastgate is important to the Town and that the Town should not stay with the approach that private property and stormwater are not its concerns.  He said that the Town is in a unique position to bring together all of the interested parties on this issue.
Council Member Bateman reported that the Town Council had received a letter from Orange Community Housing Corporation (OCHC) and the Land Trust board saying that they were moving toward a merger and asking for the Council’s endorsement.  She moved that the Council support the merger.

Town workers usually use the summer to catch up on long-term projects, take much need vacations and prepare themselves the flurry of activity the comes when the leaves begin to change.
Durham Town Clerk Laura Francis said the town hired an extra part-time intern this summer to help out with duties the flood of land records filings have forced regular staff to put off.
Middletown Town Clerk Sandra Hutton said on June 3 her office projected the revenue coming from land record filings would reach $450,000, but the Common Council, taking note of low interest rates, increased the revenues in this year’s budget to $700,000.

 Gainsborough Town Council
In the early part of the reign of Charles1, the town was important enough to be placed under the government of the Earl of Kingston.
Local legend states that George Eliot, on a visit here in the mid 1800's may have been inspired by the aegir and used it as the inspiration for the catastrophic flood in her novel 'The Mill on the Floss'.
Readers may recognise the fictional town of St Oggs as Gainsborough, and locals continue the association, for example The St Oggs Society and Tullivers Tea-Rooms on the riverside.
