Markos' bouzouki style was influenced by a mangas known as Old Nikos, who had spent 10 years in prison and played heavy Turkish-style improvisations (taxim) and songs in 9/8 zembekiko rhythm.
Markos continued to tour with Stratos and Batis, and other great rembetis such as Papaianou and Rovertakis, and his most famous song, "Frankosyriani" is about a girl Markos met while touring on his home island of Syros.

Vamvakaris is generally recognized as the single most important figure in Rebetiko history because it was he who created the "modern-day" sound we now recognize and identify as Rebetika.
It was in Markos Vamvakaris, (along with a group he was part of called Tetras) that the preceding influences such as the Cafe Aman, Cafe Chantant and the highly Urbanized folk tune, finally came together to give us the sound we now call " Classic Rebetika".
More then any other composer that either preceded or followed, Vamvakaris was the composer who has come to symbolize a singular Hellenic spirit of a more elemental and visceral nature.

Born in 1905 on the Aegean island of Syros, Markos Vamvakaris left school when he was eight years old and stowed away from home around age 15, landing in the tough port city of Piraeus.
Vamvakaris' music chronicled lives of poverty, hardship and the struggle just to survive with lyrical references to jail terms, drugs and misery in love affairs.
As the decades passed, however, Vamvakaris softened and cleaned up his lyrics for a wider audience, and he continued recording well into the 1950s.

Roughly, the (creative history) evolution of Greek Urban music may be seperated in three Eras, based on its style, the structure of the music, the instruments used etc. Pre-classical era (mid 19th century to late 1920's), classical era (late 1920's to late 1940's), meta-classical era (late 1940's to late 1960's).
Some of the most important representatives of this the Pereus style Rembertiko are Markos Vamvakaris, Giovan Tsaous, Dimitris Gogos, Spyros Peristeris, Giorgos Batis, Anestos Dellias, Stratos Pagioumtzis, Stelios Keromytis etc. It was then that we had an explosive production of records, something which clearly made the music more accessible and easily spread throughout the country.

Markos Vamvakaris, who died in 1972 at the age of 66, crafted seminal rembetika songs in the harsh years of the 1920s and 1930, but continued his prolific songwriting after the style evolved into a more polished genre.
Markos Vamvakaris — or just “Markos,” as he is commonly called — built a seemingly infinite song catalogue that proved tremendously influential for ensuing composers.
Stretching it all even further, Stelios Vamvakaris was one of the first musicians to explore the common roots of rembetika and American blues, which, despite the geographic distance, emerged simultaneously and under similar conditions.

His life and times as a Manghas are like like a classic adventure story: Quitting his factory job at age 8, imprisoned for fl marketeering at age 12, stowing away on a ship at age 15 to become associated with petty hoodlums and trafficers at the ports and in the slums of mainland Greece.
His greatest joys in life were hashish and the bouzouki, and by his late 20's, Markos was fairly infamous for his songs dealing with smuggling, prison, drugs, violence and unrequited love.

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Markos Vamvakaris (1905-72), one of the founding fathers of Greek popular music, this year’s Rebetiko Summer School at SOAS will include a one-day conference dedicated to the life and times of the composer.
The name of Vamvakaris is synonymous with the musical genre of Rebetiko, an extraordinary moment of cultural encounter in which Eastern monophony meets Western harmony, and the maqam scales of the Arab and Ottoman world interface with the well-tempered scales of the West.
Attention will be given to analysis of individual songs, their modal treatments within the tradition of maqam, and their location within the broader musical culture of the Mediterranean.

The lyrics talk of love, hashish smoking, betrayal and the trials of working class urban life in 1930s Greece amongst other things.

Through the case of Markos Vamvakaris, unique, but at the same time representative of this world, the film explores what made the rebetes so special, as well as their relationship with the rest of society.
