Markov (crater) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Markov is a lunar impact crater that is located in the northwestern part of the Moon's near side, in the Sinus Roris region of the Oceanus Procellarum lunar mare.
It lies to the south of the Oenopides crater, and is connected to the continental region to the north by ridges along the northern rim.
The rim of this crater is not appreciably eroded by impacts, and retains a sharp edge at the crest.

 Observing the Sky
The high terrain to the west of crater Herodotus to the north is still dimly illuminated by sunlight, and it looks as well that the last hints of sunlight are reaching inside the west side of Vallis Schroter, as a faint white “hairline” can yet be made of it.
Crater Vieta atop high terrain further south of them is a sure “inkwell” of darkness though, its rim barely catching sunlight.
To the south of this 80 mile wide crater, that of Oenopides remains all sunlit inside, a stark contrast to smaller nearby Markov, which is a dark puncture into the gray northern fringe of Oceanus Procellarum.

South of Grimaldi, the fused craters of Cruger and Darwin appear as an elongated and rugged teardrop shape, the floor(s) of which are almost all sunlit.
Of the craters of Piazzi and Inghirami further south, the latter has a much better defined crater rim which allows for some 1/3 of its interior to be shaded on its west side.
Giant crater Bailly dominates the southern cusp, and its west and south rim are all visible, though in fl shade within, while a rugged still-illuminated floor joins the advancing terminator.

Oenopides is a lunar crater that is located near the northwest limb of the Moon, and so appears foreshortened when viewed from the Earth.
This formation lies due south of the prominent Pythagoras crater, and is attached to the southwest rim of 'Babbage E'.
There are several small craters lying near the eastern rim, and the remainder of the floor is marked by tiny craterlets.

Nectarian highly cratered light plains (unit Np) are scattered across the map area as fillers in a few basins and large craters.
The decline in impact flux between the Nectarian and Imbrian Periods is clearly evident on the far side in the relative paucity of Imbrian and younger craters and by the reduction in diameter of the largest craters in the three youngest systems.

Additionally, in some places material seems to have piled up on top of crater rim crests and some grooves are normal to crater rim crests, suggesting ejecta deposition.

Each layer of the resulting structure is represented by its own Markov Model, and output of a lower layer is passed as input to the next higher layer.
The technique utilises Markov Models, but goes beyond usual bracketing approaches, since it is capable of recognising not only the boundaries, but also the internal structure and syntactic category of simple as well as complex NP's, PP's, AP's and adverbials.
The internal tagset is used in the underlying Markov model, while the external tagset constitutes the output of the tagger.

Different mare units are usually distinguished and mapped according to their spectral properties (which are related to compositional differences), and then crater counts done within these spectrally homogenous units determine their ages.
There is one other distinct unit in this area that is exposed around the crater Markov E - this is the Repsold Formation, which is older than the other two units and on;y exposed because the formation of Markov E excavated the buried basalts and ejected them on top of the younger lavas.
Based on their crater counts the Sharp lavas are 1.3 to 1.4 billion years old, among the youngest on the Moon.
