Ohrid was one of the main towns of Samouils's kingdom and the centre of the Ohrid Archbishopric.
The fortress includes remains of the representative palace, built in the 10th century, located north-east of the main gate; there are also remains of feudal castles, a complex of several buildings with residential and economic characteristics and a church from the 12th-14th century.

The rocky mass called MarkoviKuli are composed of numerous, diverse small denudation forms representing exceptionally fine sculpture of the relief.
This phenomenal wealth of shapes is due, mainly, to the geological composition of the terrain composed of metamorphic rocks (gneiss) broken through by younger granites¬granodiorites (ademelites), climate, relief and plant cover.
The Slavic period (9`h-10`h centuries) are also featured with the great necropolis at the south-eastern side of MarkoviKuli and social and political centre, with the throne made of stone, assumed to originate from the period of Slavs' comming to the Balkans.
Fortified towns were built in in - accessible places, circled by strong walls, strengthened by towers for the rulers of noblemen such as the following fortresses: Kale in Skopje, the tower in Ohrid.

American and Macedonian archaeology students explored the extensive ruins of MarkoviKuli situated northwest of the modern city of Prilep.
Some of the walls, such as the lower walls on the north slope, are attributed to King Markovi during the 14th century.
Other sections of the castle, such as the walls near the Keep Gate and the Upper Acropolis, are dated to the 10th and probably date to the reign of Tsar Samoil.

As Macedonia emerged from the collapse of Yugoslavia, it faced enormous challenges to its survival as an independent country.
It is often called "the city under Marko's Towers" since the town is located on the skirts of the Towers of the legendary hero King Marko, who is common in Macedonian folk songs and tales as a powerful, wise ruler, and fighter against the Turks.
There are several ancient sites in the immediate vicinity including one at MarkoviKuli.

(Utrinski Vesnik, 15.02.2006) - Macedonian-US archeological research of site “MarkoviKuli” in the southeast part of mountain Vodno will occur in period from July 5 to 25, continuing last year’s activities aimed at revealing archaeological data on the fortress’s period of construction and its purpose.
Archeologists found fragments from ceramic dishes, metal findings (including 38 bronze coins), jewelry, items of building constructions, as well as two spear arrows.
Ivan Mikulcic carried out the initial research of site “MarkoviKuli” in the 1970s.
