HyperText Markup Language (HTML) is a markup language designed for creating web pages, that is, information presented on the World Wide Web (it is also used by some e-mail clients).
These files contain information in plain text mixed with markup, that is, instructions for the program on how to display (the web browser is used to display) or process the text (generally, the HTML editor is used for this).
There is no HTML 1.0 specification because there were multiple informal HTML standards at the time and so the formal specification was given the version number 2.0 in order to distinguish it from these.

 DomainsAreFree - Definition of HTML
HTML may be displayed by a visual web browser, aural browser (one that reads the text of the page to the user), braille reader (converts pages to a braille format), email client, or a wireless device like a cellular phone.
The HTML 3.0 standard was proposed by the newly formed W3C in March, 1995, and provided many new capabilities such as support for tables, text flow around figures and the display of complex math elements.
HTML 3.1 was never officially proposed, and the next standard proposal was HTML 3.2, which had dropped the majority of the new features in HTML 3.0 and had instead adopted many browser-specific tags which had been created for the Netscape and Mosaic web browsers.

HTML element - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Informally, HTML elements are sometimes referred to as "tags" (an example of synecdoche), though many prefer the term tag strictly in reference to the semantic structures delimiting the start and end of an element.
HTML elements are classified as either block-level or inline (text-level).
elements would be required as inline element to indicate the deletion of text in the first and last paragraphs, and a third, used as a block element, to indicate the deletion in the intervening paragraphs.

HTML - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HTML is defined in formal specifications that were developed and published throughout the 1990s, inspired by Tim Berners-Lee's prior proposals to graft hypertext capability onto a homegrown SGML-like markup language for the Internet.
HTML 3.1 was never officially proposed, and the next standard proposal was HTML 3.2 (code-named "Wilbur"), which dropped the majority of the new features in HTML 3.0 and instead adopted many browser-specific element types and attributes which had been created for the Netscape and Mosaic web browsers.
HTML 4.0 likewise adopted many browser-specific element types and attributes, but at the same time began to try to "clean up" the standard by marking some of them as deprecated, and suggesting they not be used.

HTML markup can represent hypertext news, mail, documentation, and hypermedia; menus of options; database query results; simple structured documents with in-lined graphics; and hypertext views of existing bodies of information.
Most HTML elements are identified in a document as a start-tag, which gives the element name and attributes, followed by the content, followed by the end tag.
HTML user agents should be able to preserve all formatting distinctions represented in an HTML document, and be able to simultaneously present resources referred to by IMG elements (they may ignore some formatting distinctions or IMG resources at the request of the user).

HTML is now well beyond the limit of its usefulness as a way of describing information, and while it will continue to play an important role for the content it currently represents, many new applications require a more robust and flexible infrastructure.
HTML is expected to remain in common use for some time to come, and the current version of HTML is in XML syntax.
Element type names are case-sensitive: you must follow whatever combination of upper- or lower-case you use to define them (either by first usage or in a DTD or Schema).

An HTML validator is a quality assurance program used to check Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) markup elements for syntax errors.
Verifying the integrity of HTML elements manually is repetitive and tedious work; it becomes even more complicated when different sets of validation rules, such as those for cascading style sheets (CSS) and Extensible Markup Language (XML) are included in the page.
The W3C MarkUp Validation Service is a free service that checks HTML and XML code for conformance to W3C recommendations.
