Markus G. Kuhn (born 1971 in Munich) is a German computer scientist, currently teaching and researching at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory.
Kuhn's main research interests include computer security, in particular the hardware and signal-processing aspects of it, and distributed systems.
He is known, among other things, for his work on security microcontrollers, compromising emanations, and the development of the Stirmark test for digital watermarking schemes.

Markus Kuhn, a doctoral student at the University of Cambridge in England, will present his findings in a paper at the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers Inc. Symposium on Security and Privacy in Oakland, California, in May.
Kuhn also said that the person capturing the information doesn't have to be looking at the user head-on; the light can be collected from an angle and still get usable information.
Kuhn said the scenario he envisions is a user who gets caught up in work at the computer.

Markus Kuhn, who is a research assistant for the security research group at the Cambridge Lab at Cambridge University in the U.K, claims that he has already found a number of ways to hack smart cards.
Kuhn piped electricity directly into the card's microprocessor, which has as much computing power as an IBM PC from the early '90s.
By varying the voltage, Kuhn made the chip perform a number of incorrect instructions, some of which it was not even designed to do.

Markus Kuhn, a computer security researcher at the University of Cambridge, UK, says the technique is "extremely interesting" and will appeal to digital forensics experts within law enforcement.
But Kuhn notes that sophisticated digital cameras could be more problematic to trace.
Kuhn's own research shows that some types of camera are calibrated in the factory to reduce sensor noise: "Good cameras store data on how the sensitivity of individual pixels varies and software compensates each image accordingly."

For his part, Markus Kuhn, a researcher at the University of Cambridge's computer science laboratory in the UK, has found that the flickering of a computer screen can also be exploited to surreptitiously gather information.
Mr Kuhn has found that the intensity of light given off by computer monitors, but not flat panel displays, is related to the characters being displayed on that screen.
Mr Kuhn will be presenting his research findings during the IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy to be held in California from 12-15 May.

Here's a copy of a (now unavailable from its original source due to server load) posting from the Adobe users' forum, by Markus Kuhn of Cambridge University.
Apparently the banknote-blocking technology depends on recognizing a reasonably scale- and rotation-invarient watermark (in the computing sense of the word) that's embedded in the banknotes; in other words, it depends on a special feature of banknotes created for this kind of purpose, and it would not allow blocking arbitrary general images.
