He joined the Ramones on February 13, 1983, at a show at Utica, New York, after second drummer Marky Ramone was fired.
Contrary to what has been reported, Marky Ramone was not on hiatus and had Richie not quit, he would have been there till the last show.
He is also featured in the Ramones documentary End of the Century: The Story of the Ramones wearing a tie and collared shirt, reflecting that he has probably left the Ramones behind.

He was a big Dee Dee Ramone fan, and played with him in a band called The Remains, or The Ramainz, which was formed by Dee Dee Ramone, Marky Ramone and Dee Dee's wife, Barbara Zampini (Barbara Ramone).
When CJ joined the Ramones he was seen as a breath of fresh air into the band which, by the mid-80's had slowed down and lost much of their onstage energy and presence.
Johnny Ramone claimed he was happy to see Dee Dee replaced by the younger CJ becasue by the time of his leaving the band, Dee Dee had become "annoying" and had troubles with drug adiction.

I have never seen the Ramones live, and I must admit that I was born just after they took the world by storm, so besides listening to one of their albums, this is the closest I would ever get to seeing them live.
Marky played with them until 1983, when he left and was replaced by Richie Ramone, but Marky rejoined the band in 1987.

Recorded 10 studio albums with the Ramones and was with the band for 14 years altogether.
He does a grand job by keeping the Ramones music alive and Marky works very very hard and I and a lot of people get a lot of pleasure going to see him play.

Yeah, it sucks that the RAMONES are gone forever but it's kinda cool that the remaining band members are out doing new stuff.
The Intruders are about as close as we're going to get to the Ramones these days so I'll gladly accept their pure punk thrashings and their sometimes humorous, sometimes serious lyrics and plain, guitar/bass/drums sound.

We were lucky enough to talk and hang out a few months ago when he was strong enough to do the commentary track on the DVD Ramones Raw, which was his last professional contribution to the Ramones.
I spoke to him most recently when I was in LA for the 30th Anniversary concert that we put together for Ramones fans.
