Markyate is a village in north-west Hertfordshire adjacent to its border with Bedfordshire.
Formerly known as Markyate Street and Mergyate it has been a part of both counties since it was first founded as the county boundary has changed over the years, at one point the boundary being along the line of the main road itself; Hertfordshire to the East and Bedfordshire to the West.
It is located near the source of the River Ver which occasionally floods the centre of the village.

Markyate is derived from two Old English words ‘mearc’ and ‘geat’ and literally means the gate at the boundary (Hertfordshire to Bedfordshire).
Markyate straddles the Roman road Watling Street and was once a major stopping off point for coaches between London and the Midlands.
Markyate’s most famous resident was Katherine Ferrers, the Wicked Lady.

The Right Honourable Nicholas Walter Lyell, Baron Lyell of Markyate, QC (born 6 December 1938) is a British Conservative politician.
On 13 May 2005 it was announced that he would be created a life peer, and on 27 June 2005 he was created Baron Lyell of Markyate, of Markyate in the County of Hertfordshire.
Lord Lyell of Markyate is Chairman of the Board of Governors of Stowe School.

When Markyate bypass was being made in 1957 a workman found himself warming his hands with a young man with long dark hair, slim in build wearing a dark knee length cloak with ornate clasps and long leather boots, the young man promptly disappeared.

Whatever the reason, at least one was armed with a gun, and when out of the darkness a lone horse-rider approached and shot the driver, the armed passenger returned fire, mortally wounding the highwayman who rode off into the night.
And kept on riding, all the way to Markyate, where the highwayman was found dead the next day at the stately home of the Ferrers family, Markyate Cell, by servants, and where a strange and bloodied fl horse was discovered, wandering the grounds.
Markyate Cell was part of a Benedictine Priory, founded on the site of the present-day house in 1145 (a cell, being a small room within a monastery).

Lady Katherine Ferrers, one time occupant of the manor house at Markyate, is said to have been the original 'Wicked Lady', she was portrayed by actress Margaret Lockwood, in a film of the same name.
Locals tell of a shadowy woman riding the Markyate to Dunstable road and when, in 1840 the old house was destroyed by fire, those who helped fight the blaze are said to have seen Katherine's ghostly figure swinging on a large branch of an old oak tree close to the house.
Markyate Cell was a Neo-Elizabethan mansion incorporating a 12th-century priory for nuns, which was turned into a Tudor manor house in 1539 by Humphrey Bourchier.

The Life of the twelfth-century ‘holy woman’, Christina of Markyate, was first published and translated by C. Talbot (from a very difficult manuscript) as long ago as 1959.
Scholarly interest has grown slowly but surely and in recent decades Christina has taken her place amongst a small group of medieval women whose stories are becoming as well-known as those of their prominent male colleagues.
Thomas Head’s paper on ‘The marriages of Christina of Markyate’ gives a brief and straightforward account of the legal issues raised by the idea of marriage to Christ, and of the competing definitions of marriage available in twelfth-century England.

 Wicked Lady - Katherine Ferrers, legend of the Lady Highwayman
The family, strong protestants were great favourites of both Henry VIII and Edward IV The Fanshawe's had lands in Derbyshire and Essex but a Thomas Fanshawe bought the manor of Ware in June 1570 from the widow of the Earl of Huntingdon.
Markyate Cell itself was sold in 1657 to Thomas Coppin - John Edwin Cussan's History of Hertfordshire says 'and they joined in selling it to Thomas, son of Sir George Coppin of Kent.' Although Cussans makes no mention of the date 1657 is given in other records.
If this is so, then Katherine was not living at Markyate at the time when she was supposed to have been terrorising the countryside using the old Priory as a base.

Christina of Markyate was born of well-to-do burgesses of Huntingdon, England, at the dawn of the 12th century.
Christina eventually escaped, became a recluse and a nun, and then the prioress of a small community at Markyate in Hertfordshire, under the patronage of the abbot and monks of St. Albans.

On his death, she took over his room at a priory in Markyate, and was subsequently protected by Abbot Geoffrey.
The psalter was probably kept at Christina's small priory at Markyate, not far from St Albans, until the Reformation.

Until 1877 the village of Market Street, of Markyate was in three separate ecclesiastical parishes - Studham, Caddington and Flamstead and became one civil parish in 1897.
The church of St John the Baptist, in the park of Markyate Cell, was enlarged by Joseph Howell esq.
Francis W. Adye in memory of her late husband, was added in 1911: at the east end of the church is a stained glass window given by Arthur Collings Wells esq.
