Marlag und Milag Nord was a Prisoner-of-war camp in Military District X, located near Westertimke, Germany.
Milag (for Marine Internierten Lager), was first created as one of two compounds inside Sandbostel Concentration camp, south of Bremervorde, Germany, for the purpose of housing captured Merchant seamen.
Between the Autumn of 1941 and the Spring of 1942 the occupants of these compounds were transferred to Marlag und Milag Nord, two separate but adjacent camps at Westertimke, 20 kilometres away.

A similar tunnel was dug further up in the camp, without success, and yet another tunnel was dug at Marlag, this one with great success, resulting in the escape of 53 prisoners, but whether any of them were able to get out of the country is unclear.
As mentioned they had already been questioned by representatives from the German Navy at Milag, and when similar questions were asked this time, they - wisely or not - answered them in the same manner as before, namely openheartedly, though this time it was Gestapo who were to judge their answers.
On June 11-1943 about 110 men arrived Sonnenburg (a former convent located 14 kilometers northeast of Küstrin, near Oder), followed by the remaining men at the end of July, except for the 11 who had received a 1 year jail sentence; they were transferred to the Tegel jail in Berlin.

The Marlag Lager for the Navy POW and the Milag Lager for Merchant Marine POW each had 2 compounds designated as "O" and "M" for officers and enlisted men respectively.
There were a few cases of tuberculosis in the hospital, which was in the Milag section of the camp and was operated by the British, and also a very few cases of dysentery.
POW from Marlag and Milag never worked outside of the camp, but when they were asked to do so they refused.

In March 1942, 32 seamen of Irish nationality were selected and transported to the Bremen labour office and later moved to the SS camp classified as an Arbeitserziehungslager AEL at Farge in Bremen.
The merchant navy camp at Marlag Milag Nord was an external camp linked to the main concentration camp at Sandbostel.
In Milag Nord Internienten Lager (Marine Internment Camp) merchant navy officers and petty officers were not required to work.This did not apply to the ordinary Seaman.

Soon afterwards the advancing Red Army forced the Germans to evacuate the camp.
After a forced march of 700 kilometres the prisoners were interned in Stalag X-B and Marlag und Milag Nord in Sandbostel.

Reg was a prisoner at Milag und Marlag Nord from early 1943.
Once again, we were loaded on to a truck with a lot of German Naval Personnel, some of which turned out to be guards at Marlag und Milag Nord, the camp to which we were headed.
There was another camp a few miles away called Sandbostel which had quite a reputation for discipline and if any one over played their hand, they were packed off for a spell of “RandR” as the Germans laughingly called it.

During the chaos that ensued around 25% of the crew were killed whilst the remainder were later picked up by the `Thor` and taken to the `Marlag and Milag Nord Stalag XB` prisoner of war camp in Germany.This was the Northern camp of the Navy and the Merchant Navy.
Below is a plan of the Milag Nord section of the camp where the mariners would have been held captive for up to around 5 years.
A book has been written by one of the survivors of the sinking of the Voltaire who was also a prisoner of war in the camp mentioned.His name is Roger Vilven Coward and the book is called `Sailors In Cages` of which I have obtained a copy.

Tommy becomes a new P.O.W. Tommy, now properly documented as a naval prisoner, was moved to a naval POW camp near Hamburg called Marlag Milag Nord which he described as 'almost like Butlins' where there were music groups, theatre groups, libraries and courses in virtually anything you wished to learn.
As a punishment he was transferred to a small satellite camp of Marlag Milag Nord in the Harz mountains.

At the top of the hanky the artist/owner has written Marlag und Milag Nord, Germany.
The Altmark was a German Prison Ship and Marlag and Milag Nord were POW camps in Germany.
There are two flags shown at the top of the hanky, in one is written the name William and in the other Ruth, so presumably William painted the hanky while in the POW camp, and Ruth was his wife or sweetheart.

Atlantis in 1940/1, however after the Atlantis was sunk by the Devonshire the book Milag states that he was made commander of the Milag naval prisoner of war camp!
and then on 17 April 1945 took responsibility for Marlag as well, surely the camp commander title was a step down, I would have thought that he would have been given another ship to command as I see he became an Admiral after the war.
The photographs used in most cases are of Bernhard Rogge, and the tales by the ex P.O.Ws seem to have added to the confusion.

(MARine LAGer) held Royal Navy Prisoners while Milag (Marine Internee LAGer) was for merchant seamen, passengers and some other interned civilians.
The camps were located close to one another but had little to do with one another apart from sharing the camp hospital (in Milag) a common cemetry and a separate shower block (from which the Albert R.N. escape took place)
During WW II some 4,500 seamen and civilian passengers endured illegal captivity in this camp.

In June 1940, Walter was on board the tanker MV British Petrol bound for Trinidad, when she was stopped and sunk by the German raider Widder.
An account of his death (murder) was given by two eye witnesses and included in Gabe Thomas's book, Milag: Captives of the Kriegsmarine.
The account of his death is given in the POW Logbook of T. (Tom) McNamee along with a photograph of his grave.

Some unique items, such as listings for internment camps are held by the Department of Documents and these can be of real value to the family historian.  An outstanding example of this is the Changi Civilian Internment Camp register, which was kept until 31 December 1942.
A similar valuable listing is a 230 page register for Marlag and Milag Nord (a prison camp for merchant seamen at Westertimke in Germany) covering the period between July 1942 and January 1945.
This is part of a collection formed by the individual who was imprisoned there, and so shows the range of information that can be found in the various collections.

Only then were the Allies able to determine what had actually happened to the A.D. Huff.
The rest spent 14 months in Stalag XB and then were moved to the naval and merchant marine camp Marlag und Milag Nord near Bremerhaven for the rest of the war.
They were finally released on 27 April, 1945 by the British 2nd Army's Highlanders.
