Pickthall’s novels, at their best, resemble a marriage of the two styles, just as he found in Islamic faith the ideal which he had sought in Christianity: a medieval liturgy combined with a low ecclesiology, the hieratic dignity of Laud invigorated by the social passions of Dissent.
Pickthall, too, became anxious for Turkey, seeing that the old British policy of upholding the integrity of the Ottoman Empire, which had begun even before Britain intervened on Turkey’s side in the Crimean War, and had been reinforced by Disraeli’s anti-Russian strategy, was steadily disintegrating in the face of Young Turk enthusiasm for Germany.
Pickthall a most amiable and deeply religious man. And although he was a convert he had nothing of the fanatic in him that most converts, no matter to what faith they are converted, betray in their speech and act.

Marmaduke, a fairly sickly child, suffered from bronchitis and a brain fever at age eight, which seems to have affected his burgeoning interest in arithmetic.
Pickthall was convinced that the acquisition of eastern languages would help him find a way into the Foreign Service, so he left early for Cairo, spending weeks wandering the city, developing an empathy for the poorer inhabitants and learning Arabic.

A strong and steadfast advocate of the Ottoman Empire, Pickthall devoted his time and attention to studying the mysteries of the Orient, publishing several highly informative articles and novels in regards to the subject.
While under the service of the Nizam of Hyderabad, Pickthall published his celebrated translation of the Qur'an, becoming the first English translation to have been authorized by the Al-Azhar University, and earning the praise of the Times Literary Supplement as "a great literary achievement."
