Marmaronetta angustirostris (a globally threatened species) has occurred in the area, and is probably regular.
Marmaronetta angustirostris is probably a scarce resident; one was seen in June 1973 and thought to be breeding, and small numbers (maximum 7) have been observed in winter.
Marmaronetta angustirostris is probably a scarce resident in the marshes, although there has been only one recent record (a single bird in January 1977).
The probably extinct Pink-headed Duck, previously listed as Rhodonessa caryophyllacea, has recently been shown by genetic analysis to be closely related to the Red-crested Pochard so has now been transferred to the same genus, as Netta caryophyllacea.
The Marbled Duck (Marmaronetta angustirostris) is difficult to classify, but is now most often also placed in the diving duck group.
Seaducks commonly found in coastal areas such as the Long-tailed Duck (formerly known in the US as Oldsquaw), scoters, goldeneyes and eiders are also sometimes colloquially referred to in North America as diving ducks because they also feed by diving.

About 180 Marmaronetta angustirostris were found wintering at Haur Al Ahmar in January 1968 (Georg and Vielliard, 1970); this is one of the few areas in Iraq where this threatened species has been found in winter.
An important breeding area for Marmaronetta angustirostris, and an extremely important staging and wintering area for a wide variety of migratory waterfowl.
Marmaronetta angustirostris was described as a "plentiful" breeding species prior to about 1920 (Ticehurst et al.
On 17 October 2004, 2,300 Ferruginous Ducks Aythya nyroca and 652 Marbled Ducks Marmaronetta angustirostris were counted at Barrage Oued Rmal, and 30 White-headed Ducks Oxyura leucocephala at Barrage Sidi Jdid.
Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris with young were recorded at Oued Sed, Sousse, on 8 June (two pairs with four and ten young respectively and one adult with 14 young), at Soliman on 13 June (one adult with 10 young) and at Lebna reservoir, Nabeul (seven adults with 15 young).
Also in the Douz area c760 Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris were counted on 2 December, at least 4,000 on 13 February and 1,360+ between 20 and 23 March.

The marshes regularly hold over 20,000 waterfowl in winter, including over 1% of the regional populations of Threskiornis aethiopicus, Anser albifrons, A.
Noteworthy fauna: Both Lake Parishan and Dasht-e Arjan are extremely important for wintering waterfowl of a wide variety of species, and are also of considerable importance for breeding waterfowl, notably Pelecanus crispus, Marmaronetta angustirostris, Aythya nyroca and Oxyura leucocephala, especially in wet years.
Breeding species include about 10 pairs of Marmaronetta angustirostris, a few pairs of Rallus aquaticus and Porzana pusilla, 25 pairs of Himantopus himantopus, 25 pairs of Vanellus leucurus and 10 pairs of Sterna albifrons, as well as Ceryle rudis, Acrocephalus melanopogon and A.

In a comprehen- sive study of waterfowl osteology, Woolfenden (1961) recommended that the "perching ducks" (Tribe Cairinini, sensu Delacour and Mayr 1945, but exclusive of Plectropterus) be merged into the "dabbling ducks" (Tribe Anatini).
Johns- gard proposed to re-assign the Pink-headed Duck (Rhodonessa caryophyllacea; 1961a) and Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta [Anas] angustiros- tris; 1961c) to the pochards (Tribe Aythyini).
Although it is absent in most "allies" placed in other tribes (Sarkidiornis, Mer- ganetta, Malacorhynchus, Hymenolaimus, and Marmaronetta), it is suggested in several others (Plectropterus, Salvadorina, and Heteronetta).

The Marbled Teal Marmaronetta angustirostris is undergoing rapid declines throughout its remaining range, with the destruction and degradation of habitat (particularly breeding habitat) being the most important cause; hunting and a range of other factors are also contributing.

He has also been a member of the research team tracking a population of Marbled Teal (Marmaronetta angustirostris) in the wetlands of Southern Alicante for the Environmental Council of the Valencian Government.
He has also collaborated on the annual ornithological reports for the Valencian Community and on the censuses of wintering and breeding birds done by the Spanish Ornithological Society in the wildlife areas of Southern Alicante.
