Maroon populations are found from the Amazon River Basin to the American states of Florida and North Carolina.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Maroon communities began to disappear as forests were razed, although some countries, such as Guyana and Suriname, still have large Maroon populations living in the forests.
Nanny was leader of the Jamaican Maroons in the 18th century.

For eight-piece band Maroon Town of London's Brixton the jail among snow-covered slag heaps from decommissioned uranium mines was one of the stops on their Czech tour.
The band Maroon Town have performed concerts in prisons in South America as well as former Soviet republics, but their first gig in prison was in Kingston, Jamaica.

Maroon Town under the pseudonym the 'MT Headz' have their boisterous ska/rap single 'Ya Ya' on the soundtrack and accompanying CD of this film - 'Take the Lead' which was released in April 2006.
Maroon Town, one of the few bands ever to do so were invited to play to the inmates of Brixton Prison for their Christmas 99 celebration.
Maroon Town had met one of the organisers, Gautam Ghosh, a prominent local musician and composer whilst he was in the UK making links with groups and artists with a committment to community activism.
