The follow-up to 1998's Stunt, Maroon reached the Top 5 in Canada and the US, selling a million units in America alone.

Barenaked Ladies: Maroon - PopMatters Music Review
Maroon can almost be praised for simply existing in a musical arena that seemingly has little patience for such acts of brazen pop sincerity.
A lot of the dark thoughts that permeate Maroon can likely be traced to dealing with the possibility of losing an integral member of the band, as well as the emotional time and effort that BNL have put into their careers to find success.
It's too early to say whether Maroon will compare in terms of sales, and in all honesty the mass musical audience has never shown a huge affinity for intelligent pop, but this is an album that may mark one of the top highlights of an already illustrious career.

Barenaked Ladies seem to have been marooned on an island for two years as their fans have anxiously awaited their follow-up album to the quadruple platinum selling Stunt.
The reason for the album's more serious side may be due to the fact of the actual aging of the band's members.
It may seem like a bit of a disappointment to the die-hard fan as it is different from the previous albums.

From the BNL back catalogue, this was not the most well received (such as Gordon, their first album was) nor as anticipated as Stunt, back in 1998.
The reason might be perhaps that Maroon was chosen as it is the most recent studio outing from one of Canada’s premier music exports.
Nor my second for that matter, however this album is an eclectic mix of pop and rock with well written lyrics covering many topics including a car accident arrived at by speeding in the slightly morbid Tonight is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel, and it makes a great DVD-Audio disc.

Producer Was, the celebrity career-fixer whose resume includes albums by the Rolling Stones, is perfect for the task: He's a sucker for that stuff, understands how to use studio trickery to create that magic and knows enough to avoid gooping up an otherwise solid song.
He doesn't have to do much: Each of Maroon's first six tracks is a compact little marvel of logic and structure, and each is kept aloft by melodies that recall a less contrived era of rock history.
And when they slip, the album's sequencing bails them out: The few gaudy musical-theater indulgences -- the grandiose fable "Sell, Sell, Sell" and the pathos-heavy closer, "Tonight Is the Night I Fell Asleep at the Wheel" -- can easily be skipped.
