The Green-cheeked Conure or Green-cheeked Parakeet is a small parrot of the genus Pyrrhura.
It is primarily green, with a grey breast, dark head, maroon tail and blue flight feathers.
Its normal weight is about 70 g; its average length (including tail) is 25 cm (10 inches).

A singing White-bibbed Antbird, our first Golden-chevroned Tanagers, 9 Plain Parakeets, 2 White-throated Wood-creepers and 1 White-throated Hummingbird were some of the few birds we found.

 Tropical Birding Southeast Brazil birding trip report June 2005
Peach-fronted Parakeet (Aratinga aurea) - Plentiful around Canastra and Cipó, but we also found a few at Linhares.
Maroon-bellied Parakeet (Pyrrhura frontalis) - One of the most common parakeets in the Atlantic Forest.
White-eared Parakeet (Pyrrhura leucotis) - An unforgettable "clump" of them in a tree at Linhares, all preening busily after the rain.

After a relaxing lunch back at the lodge we walked around the wetland that can be seen from the lodge.
Tsai and his wife had reason to celebrate (again) as the Nanday Parakeets they had found were the 4000th bird for her.
While we stopped to photograph some Peach-fronted Parakeets we had a fortuitous encounter with a European birder who informed us 2km further along the road he had just seen a Sungrebe.

We eventually managed to pin down around half a dozen of these wonderful little primates.
Time was marching on, but the birds kept appearing, with notable additions of 2-3 Plain Parakeets and much greater numbers of Maroon-bellied Parakeets (initially not showing any red on the belly, they were eventually shown to sport this feature).
I had seen 2 Grey-necked Wood-rails when first wandering around the gardens alone, but just as we were about to leave, with an exclamation of “so much for any more wood-rails!”, we coincidentally looked to the left to the sight of a limping individual right out in the open.

 Itatiaia, Iguacu & the Pantanal Bird Watching Report
NANDAY PARAKEET (Nandayus nenday) PC: definitely one of the beauties in the parrot world, and we had some fine views at Caiman, where it is common.
BLAZE-WINGED PARAKEET (Pyrrhura devillei) PC: certainly the most range-restricted species we saw this year, its distribution just a small dot on the map of this part of South America...we had some very nice views of several small groups, especially along the way to Baiazinha at Caiman.
MAROON-BELLIED PARAKEET (Pyrrhura frontalis) IT and IF: a regular sight and sound in the forest treetops at Itatiaia, where we had great views of a couple at a nest or roost hole outside the hotel one morning; we also glimpsed a few at Iguaçu.

There was a wealth of parrots, with very tame Scaly-headed and Blue-fronted in the garden, and White-eyed, Nanday and Monk parakeets on the grass immediately outside.
A pair of Red-and-Green Macaws, Peach-fronted Parakeets, a Red-billed Scythebill, Red-crested Cardinal and Campo Oriole were all around the same small paddock, along with a very photogenic pair of Hyacinth Macaws.
Great looks at various birds at PC (yellowish eyerings, and the orangey-red belly is separated from the dark throat by an irregular white band (lacking in Surucua).

The form "Pyrrhura hypoxantha" was formerly (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1970) considered a valid species, but it is now considered to represent xanthistic individuals of P.
Ridgely and Greenfield (2001) suggested that the subspecies pacifica of northwestern South America may deserve recognition as a separate species from Pyrrhura melanura.
Called "Red-winged Parakeet" in Meyer de Schauensee (1970), but that name typically applied only when dilectissima and costaricensis are considered conspecific (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1966).

We then headed for a track that lead to an abandoned building and whilst we walked for a couple of kilometres our driver followed in the minibus.
We didn’t actually go up in the canopy tower, which requires individuals to be winched up, but in its immediate surroundings we were able to add Blue-throated Parakeet, Yellow-breasted Flycatcher and Crested Becard.

 Eastern Brazil 2002
I stop at a small square below the church where there are few people, and more birds than I've seen so far.
Twenty minutes sitting on a bench provides my fist lifer, a fly-by Plain Parakeet, and looks at some of the common tropical birds that I haven't seen in at least five years.
In addition, there is some kind of hummingbird making a nest near the park, coming in every few minutes to peel moss from one of the trees.

Hopefully, you can key in on what has the hen so unsettled.
Look for things such as other pairs that have higher perches than those in the maroon bellies' cage.
Make sure that the sides of the cage are blinded off from other cages in the area of her nest box.

 Southern Brazil Trip Report
One of the highlights of the morning was an adult Jabiru feeding two young on a huge stick nest which had been sub-let to a colony of Monk Parakeets.
The highlights en route to the pousada were Black-crowned Night-Heron, Blue-crowned Parakeet and Little Woodpecker.
Ruby-crowned, and Brazilian Tanager were present as were Plain Parakeet, Black-crowned Foliage-gleaner, Ferruginous Antbird, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, White-tailed Trogon and White-shoulded Fire-eye.

We then left this exasperating place and drove to Jeremoabo crossing from the state of Alagoas into Bahia where the mighty São Francisco river has cut a deep valley.
We then continued southward through coastal white sand (restinga) forest to the lively city of Salvador, the capital of the huge state of Bahia.
A short seawatch just after dawn yielded nothing, but in the gardens and surrounding wasteland, we found Peach-fronted Parakeets, Plain-bellied Emerald and admired the sunning behaviour of a group of ten Guira Cuckoos.

 Bird watching Trip Report from South East Brazil
Leaving Teresópolis on the drive north we stopped for some roadside birding and had good views of Rufous-capped Antshrike, Chicli Spinetail and best of all Cinnamon Tanager.
Ricardo filled the hummingbird feeders on the veranda at the house near the entrance with sugar water and within five minutes Saw-billed Hermit and the beautiful Festive Coquette were new additions to our trip list.
We spent all morning at the fazenda and our stroll produced a great diversity of species and a high bird list including Plain Parakeet, Surucua Trogon, Channel-billed Toucan, Streak-capped Antwren, Gray-capped Tyrannulet, Yellow-rumped Flycatcher, Gray-hooded Attila, White-thighed Swallow and Neotropical River Warbler.

 Surfbirds Birding Trip Report: South-east Brazil - May 31st — June 14th 2005
Not for the first time on the trip, we retired, with the emphasis on the tired, after a hearty evening meal (and a hearty lunch and a not-exactly minimal breakfast) well pleased with our efforts.
June 2nd Up at 6am for morning exercise, fags, coffee and another excellent breakfast, depending upon individual preference, a still ailing Andy drove us a short way up the hill to the start of the CEDAE Trail, a broad access track created by the local water company that starts at 600m altitude.
A party of five landed high in the canopy with some Maroon-bellied Parakeets on the Cedae Trail.

Andean Condors, sometimes at close range, numerous Puna (Variable) Hawks, a flock of (22!) Tawny-fronted Dotterels, Andean Gulls, the first flock of Burrowing Parrots, Grey-hooded Parakeets, Common Diuca-Finches, Rock Earthcreepers, Cordilleran and Puno Canastero's, a first White-throated Cacholote, had crippling views on another endemic, the Sandy Gallito, Hellmayer's Pipit, and many more goodies.
A flock of 9 birds on October 30 along the Camino de Corniza (Jujuy) was seen on very close range.
On November 3 we saw 3 birds along the Cuesta del Obispo Road (Salta), and on November 4 another 2 south of Cachi.

Immediately there were new birds everywhere and after a lovely lunch we returned to our front row seats.
Birds seen included Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Squirrel Cuckoo, Saw-billed Hermit, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Black Jacobins, Violet-capped Woodnymph, Spot-billed Toucanet, White-barred Piculet, Great Kiskadee, Rufous-bellied Thrush, Creamy-bellied Thrush, Ruby-crowned Tanager, Brazilian Tanager, Sayaca Tanager, Golden-chevroned Tanager, Violaceous Euphonia, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, Green-headed Tanager, Red-necked Tanager and Buff-throated Saltator.
Some of us decided to explore the grounds and managed to turn up a few more birds like Rusty-margined Flycatcher, Tropical Kingbirds, Gray Hooded Attila, Saffron Finches, Double-collared Seedeaters and Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher
