At 0723 two Maroon-tailed Parakeets landed 20 m above the ground in the dead branches of a living tree on the south bank of the Duda River.
The female then moved her tail outward to the left side, facilitating the placement of the male's cloaca in contact with hers.
During copulation the male's tail and lower back rotated slowly in a clockwise direction and he ruffled the female's neck feathers with his bill.

I have the second shift in the colpa hide and 10 minutes after I arrive I am treated to an hour-long display of dusky headed and maroon tailed parakeets, as well as two pigeons feeding.
After the first careful approaches it is a constant flurry of activity with up to 30 birds on the clay at any one time, picking, flying off, sitting in the branches around the colpa, chirping, taking off in one swoop, only to return again a few minutes later.
The maroon tailed parakeet is not even meant to be this far South, but I identify it unmistakeably.

A beautiful male with a full tail was seen at the feeders at Bellavista.
Wing and tail spots were brighter than the field guide shows.
This, and the next, species are more properly called whitestarts rather than redstarts since the tail flashes white instead of red.

Species of note for the day included: Maroon-bellied Parakeet, Plain Parakeet, Scaly-headed Parrot, Lesser Swallow-tailed Swift, Saw-billed Hermit, Rufous-breasted Hermit, Scale-throated Hermit, Sombre Hummingbird, Star-throated Antwren, Ferruginous Antbird, White-shouldered Fire-Eye, Yellow-lored Tody-Flycatcher, Chestnut-bellied Euphonia, Green-headed, Red-necked, Golden Chevroned, Brazilian and Ruby-crowned Tanagers.
After an early breakfast we headed off for the 20 minute drive to the beginning of the Theodoro Trail.
It turned out to be a blisteringly hot day, but due to some very good eyes in the group...

While passing through a patch of humid forest a pair of parakeets overflying the road chose to pitch down in a nearby tree.
A stop for lunch at a roadside cafe is lucky as a group of Gray-cheeked Parakeets fly overhead and then perch briefly in some dead trees.
Flocks of Maroon-tailed Parakeets dash past and several Black-capped Pygmy-Tyrants, among the world's smallest birds, show well perched at eye level.

The form "Pyrrhura hypoxantha" was formerly (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1970) considered a valid species, but it is now considered to represent xanthistic individuals of P.
Ridgely and Greenfield (2001) suggested that the subspecies pacifica of northwestern South America may deserve recognition as a separate species from Pyrrhura melanura.
Called "Red-winged Parakeet" in Meyer de Schauensee (1970), but that name typically applied only when dilectissima and costaricensis are considered conspecific (e.g., Meyer de Schauensee 1966).

 Ecuador 1998 Bird List
Three males, two with spectacular full tails, were called in at a spot about 4 km up the Nono-Mindo Road from Tandayapa.
One bird even perched in a shrub up the slope and we got good looks at it as it called, bobbing its spectacular white-tipped tail in rhythm with its calls.
A male with a short tail came to the feeders at Bellavista Lodge, which is a somewhat high elevation for this species.

Tataupa Tinamou, Russet-crowned, Rufous-sided and Uniform Crakes heard, while Yellow Tyrannulet, Olive-chested Flycatcher and the gustavi race of Cobalt-winged Parakeet as the most remarkable species seen.
We spent a lot of time on both sides of the tunnel, a very good birding area.
Including the morning of April 1 we saw there goodies like Maroon-tailed Parakeet, Festive Coquette, Brown-mandible Aracari, Chestnut-tipped Toucanet, Spectacled Bristle-Tyrant, Slaty-capped Shrike-Vireo and White-winged Tanager.

The place was crawling with Rainbow Starfrontlets and with a little patience I was able to get incredible looks at all the colors.
This bird is about Shining Sunbeam size with a rufous body and tail, red, yellow and green on the forehead of the otherwise green head, fl throat and chest.
Utuana can be easily reached from the Macara area - we did just that the following afternoon.

Finally in Guayaquil we look for the Guayaquil woodpecker and the rare great green macaw among other 200 tropical birds like the pale mandibled aracari, gray-backed hawk, Guayaquil woodpecker, blue tailed trogon and Esmeraldas antbird.
As we get close to the beach, we might find white tailed jay, pale-brown tinamon, Peruvian thick-knee, and red masked and gray-cheeked parakeets, along with many gulls, terns and shore birds, which indeed will include the fishing OSPREY.
