  CinemaSpeak.Com - Marooned in Iraq
While this very basic description may turn off many filmgoers due to the inference of a grim, intense, punishing movie, Ghobadi proves himself to be a deft handler of divergent tones, beginning the proceedings in a whimsical fashion that gives way to the emotional wallop of an ending (although the delivery's relatively subtle).
Marooned in Iraq provides a rare look into a group of people most know very little about, but please don't read those words as merely a token vote for this film's novelty.
This deeply affecting movie triumphs because of the considerable skills of the filmmaker behind it.

'Marooned in Iraq' - MOVIE REVIEW - Los Angeles Times - calendarlive.com
Bahman Ghobadi's "Marooned in Iraq," a lusty affirmation of life in the face of catastrophe, opens in the wake of the Gulf War with Saddam Hussein turning his wrath on the Kurds.
"Marooned" is set along the border between Iran and Iraq, as was Ghobadi's previous feature, "A Time for Drunken Horses." It is also rich in images of natural beauty and the warmth and passion of traditional Kurdish music and musicians.
On the Iranian side of the border with Iraq, the elderly Mirza (Shahab Ebrahimi), a celebrated singer among his people, has received word that his fourth, much younger ex-wife, Hanareh, once a singer with Mirza's band, has been entertaining in refugee camps along the border and is in need of his help.

Marooned is just as good as each of them, and it was made in 1969.
After about five months (in movie time, of course), the men begin to show fatigue, getting a bit careless with some of the non-vital equipment, and the decision is made to have them return a bit early.
Crenna, Franciscus, and Hackman are great as the three marooned astronauts, each reacting in their own particular ways to not only the claustrophobia of the tiny capsule, but also the knowledge that they are basically dead men floating, and their time extremely limited.

While watching Marooned (1969), one can't help but make comparisons to Ron Howard's much more successful and popular Apollo 13 (1995), but, as the latter was based on real life events, Marooned supposes a very likely scenario, one that asks what would happen if astronauts were stranded in space, unable to return to Earth.
Crenna, Franciscus, and Hackman are great as the three marooned astronauts, each reacting in their own particular ways to not only the claustrophobia of the tiny capsule, but also the knowledge that they are basically dead men floating, and their time extremely limited.
The movie opens with a detailed look at the astronauts' launch into orbit aboard Ironman 1, complete with techno chatter between various NASA departments reporting they are "All Systems Go." Post-launch, we see first and second stage separations, orbital insert, and even the docking of Ironman 1 with the space station.

Ghobadi displays what will turn out to be a typically cheeky wit in introducing Barat, initially showing him at the steering bars of his motorcycle, then revealing that driver and bike are riding on the rear of a flatbed truck.
As the three move westward, Hanareh continues to elude them; at the movie’s midpoint, they cross into Iraq and the devastation and human suffering begins to move towards the forefront.

Ghobadi infuses his movie with a humor that can almost be called Seinfeldian, and it's this mix of laughter with tears that gives Marooned in Iraq its big impact.
A mix of war film, road movie, and romantic comedy-drama, this peripatetic yarn is less resonant than Ghobadi's beautiful "A Time for Drunken Horses," but it has enough energy to keep your eyes popping and your toes tapping.
This lusty, heartfelt movie has a near Brueghelian visual energy and a humanist passion as contagious as its music.

The author of “Monkees Marooned,” the late noted TV writer Stanley Ralph Ross, would compose one more Monkees script: the teleplay and story (with Corey Upton) of Episode No. 42, “The Wild Monkees;” sadly, he succumbed to lung cancer on Thursday, March 16, 2000.
Aside from a string of cameos in several first-season segments, "Monkees Marooned" was the only second-season Monkees episode appearance for John London, as well as his last; his only other on-screen appearance was in the 1981 Cannon film New Year's Evil as a Floor Manager.

For a while, the subtitles were off (never saw this happen before) - the words were about 15 seconds behind the characters - it was very distracting to see a conversation happening and then wait a while before you found out what they were talking about, meanwhile the picture's moved on.
It's not fair to blame the movie for this (and some people didn't mind), but it takes you out of the experience.
The story eventually settles into a nice rhythm and the dramatic images take over - from the bizarre (seeing a motorbike on the back of a mule) to a haunting scene where the teacher takes his class of orphans out to see planes and explains about bombings (some field trip).

 Marooned
"Marooned" is an often overlooked motion picture because of its poor special effects and non-existent musical sound track.
This motion picture was made after the Apollo 1 fire at a time when the redesigned Apollo spacecraft had yet to be finalized and because of this we see a Command Module in Marooned which is a curious combination of Block I and Block II design elements.
The Apollo was also interesting as a movie set because, like the "Proteus" submarine in "Fantastic Voyage", the interior was actually built inside the exterior as an integral unit.

Part-road movie, part serious and comic political drama, "Marooned in Iraq" follows these three musicians, Mirza, and his two sons Audeh and Barat, as they travel through bombings and misery in search of Mirza's ex-wife Hanareh in Iraq.
The movie's original title was "Songs of My Homeland" a more accurate translation of its original Kurdish name.
Scripts were not necessary for the entire film as non-professional actors simply portrayed their own life experiences replicating effectively the effects of Iraqi attacks to Kurdish villages.

Marooned is an ultra-fluffy crime thriller that's so incredibly bland and inconsequential that it makes First Love Unlimited look like The English Patient.

Probably the most uninteresting movie of the year, and an unfortunate move for Gigi Leung, who has been showing true promise of late.

Marooned, which opens April 25 in New York and tentatively for May 23 in Los Angeles, has won prizes at the Chicago and São Paolo film festivals.
Though Marooned is a funny movie with a varied cast of lovable eccentrics, it manages to touch on deadly serious issues, including Hussein's reign of terror, chemical warfare and the isolated, nomadic lifestyle that has been forced on the Kurds.
Ghobadi sidestepped controversy with the tough Iranian censors by avoiding scenes of kissing, hugging, sex, violence, blood and women showing their hair, all of which are banned in Iran.

“Marooned” is sure to remind viewers of Ron Howard’s “Apollo 13,” which itself was a dramatization based on real life events.
“Marooned” is a bit long, but never the less quite interesting for those interested in the space program and in late 1960’s science fiction drama.
“Marooned” is presented in an anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) aspect ratio that presents the film on DVD as close as possible to the way the film was theatrically exhibited for home video viewers.

Marooned Review Movie Review Film Marooned: Richard Crenna, James Franciscus, Gene Hackman, Gregory Peck, David ...
Its unwitting status as a precursor to reality aside, "Marooned" is solidly made and well-acted, but consider this: Ron Howard's "Apollo 13," made twenty-five years after the fact, was able to create suspense and tension even when the outcome was always in sight.
For some reason, Sturges is unable to accomplish this with his film: between all the scientific hubbub and moments of emotional breakdowns and tearful exchanges, there's long, drawn-out periods where not much happens to keep things up to speed intensity-wise.
This is quite odd, for "Marooned" could easily be called a carbon copy of "Apollo 13," and the fact that at the time of its release its final outcome was pretty much unknown, you'd think this would provide some sort of excitement.
