The 3790ha farm is owned by two local Maori incorporations, Mangahauini Inc and Tokomaru K5B Inc. It has 2146 effective hectares of grazing in two blocks, one of 539ha including 55ha of flats at Hikuwai south of Tokomaru Bay, the other 1607ha in the hills behind Tokomaru Bay.
While Marotiri has benefited from higher market prices in the past couple of years, there has been a massive boost in production per hectare from 180kg in 1997-98 to 297kg this year.
Marotiri’s monitor farm facilitator Peter Andrew of AgFirst in Gisborne says the production increases are impressive.
The group also includes the uninhabited atoll of Maria (Îles Maria) and the rocky peaks of Marotiri (Îlots de Bass).
The islands are the remains of former volcanic peaks, thought to been have formed over a hot-spot, in much the same way as the Hawaiian Islands.
The islands at the southeast end of the chain are geologically the youngest — the Îles Marotiri (Îlots de Bass) are a tight cluster of 3 rocky islands and emergent rocks whose steep slopes support a scant vegetation.
Rebecca Simmonds (artist) assisted by all Marotiri School students, involved in brainstorming through to painting.
Keen to create a mural that reflected the uniqueness of Marotiri School, all students were involved in the project from gathering ideas, culling them down and then finally getting them onto the wall with assistance from artists Rebecca Simmonds.
The mural incorporates the heart of the school, the children, and the natural environment.

Air Mails of New Zealand: Great Barrier Island Pigeongram Service - 1897-1903 (page1)(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Distinctive stamps were provided by overprinting a special printing of the pale greenish-blue stamps of the original Great Barrier Island service.
The overprint "Marotiri Pigeongram" was in two lines in deep blue.
The stamp was first used on August 24, 1899, and postmarked copies on complete flimsies are of extreme rarity, as only a few of the total issue of 240 stamps were used.

Rimatara is a raised island in the Austral (or Tubuai) Islands and is the second smallest of all EBAs after Laysan (EBA 216).
In general, the Austral Islands are poorly known, and Maria and Marotiri have never been properly investigated by an ornithologist.
An unidentified Acrocephalus was reported from Raivavae in 1968, but was not found in 1990 (Seitre and Seitre 1991), and could therefore have been a vagrant.

The database contains the historical presence of pests, and does not record (at this time) which species have died out or been eradicated - but it is hoped that this will be included in the future.
The 15 moai were restored in the early 1990's, reversing some of the damage done when an earthquake and corresponding tsunami flattened the statues and sent several topknots far inland in the early 1960's.
The island to the right is Motu Marotiri.
Just behind me is Rano Raraku, the quarry, or birthplace of all the moai.
It took less than an hour and three-quarters to reach Auckland.
The service ran between Newton Rd in Auckland, Great Barrier Island, the Marotiri Islands near Whangarei, and Port Charles on the Coromandel Peninsula.
The world’s first 'airmail' stamps were issued for the Great Barrier Pigeon-Gram Service from 1898 to 1908.
