Marquess of Queensberry is a title in the peerage of Scotland.
The Marquesses also held the title of Duke of Queensberry from 1684 to 1810, when it was inherited by the Duke of Buccleuch.
The subsidiary titles of the Marquess of Queensberry are: Earl of Queensberry (created 1633), Viscount of Drumlanrig (1628) and Lord Douglas of Hawick and Tibbers (1628), all in the peerage of Scotland.

John L. Sullivan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The heavyweight contest occured under the Marquess of Queensberry rules, but it was neither the first title fight under those rules nor was it the first title fight using boxing gloves.
However, Sullivan had fought with gloves under the Marques of Queensberry Rules as early as 1880 and only fought bare knuckle three times in his entire career (Ryan - 1882, Mitchell - 1888 and Kilrain - 1889).
His bare knuckle image was created because all his infrequent fights from 1888 up the Corbett fight in 1892 had been bare knuckle.

John L. Sullivan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Sullivan, undefeated up to that point, did not defend his title for the next four years, and he enjoyed the sweet life many champions take after winning the title, becoming a alcoholic, feeling invincible, and getting out of boxing shape.
In 1893, he finally agreed to defend his title, meeting Gentleman Jim Corbett, and he lost by a knockout in 21 rounds, in the first fight under the new Marques of Queensberry rules, and the first title fight held using boxing gloves.
Sullivan therefore, became known as the last bare knuckles champion, and the first one to use gloves.

The friend's name was Oscar Wilde and the case was against the Marques of Queensberry.
The judge had sided with Ruskin against Whistler but it must be said that he had represented the gut instinct of the common herd - of most of the population at large.
As was common in Victorian London, society had been prepared to turn a blind eye as long as the two were discreet but Alfred Douglas caused Wilde no end of problems by being too flamboyant and flaunting their relationship.
