  Barons and dukes of Chandos - LoveToKnow 1911
CHANDOS The English title of Chandos began as a barony in 1554, and was continued in the family of Brydges (becoming a dukedom in 1719) till 1789.
In 1822 the dukedom was revived in connexion with that of Buckingham.
Chandos, who was lord-lieutenant of the counties of Hereford and Radnor, and chancellor of the university of St Andrews, became involved in financial difficulties, and after his death on the 9th of August 1744 Canons was pulled down.

 Duke of Buckingham
His son, Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, was restored to the title upon Henry VII's ascension to the throne in 1485, but he was ultimately executed for treason in 1521 due to his opposition to Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Henry VIII's chief advisor.
Buckingham, who continued in office as chief minister into the reign of James's son, Charles I, was responsible for a policy of war against Spain and France, and was assassinated by a Puritan fanatic in 1628 as he prepared an expedition to relieve the Huguenots of La Rochelle.
The title of Duke of Buckingham and Normanby was created in 1703 for John Sheffield, Marquess of Normanby, a notable Tory politician of the late Stuart period, who served under Queen Anne as Lord Privy Seal and Lord President.

He was executed on March 20, 1549 and Sudeley passed to the Marquess of Northampton, Katherine Parr's brother William, but he was stripped of his titles and properties after the failure of John Dudley's plot to make Jane Grey Queen.
In 1554, Mary I gave Sudeley to John Brydges, Lord Chandos, and it remained in their family into Elizabeth's reign.
Elizabeth I was entertained three times at Sudeley, including a spectacular feast in 1592 to celebrate the anniversary of the defeat of the Spanish Armada.

By the time of the English Civil War Sudeley was the property of Lord Chandos a supporter of the Royalists who were destined to lose the war.
The castle however seemed to be at the end of it's long history as it fell to further ruin, this time not from an army, but from the elements of nature.
In 1810 history took a turn for the better when the Marquess of Buckingham bought the castle and put it to use as an inn and stables.

James Brydges (1673-1744), 1st Duke of Chandos and Marquess of Carnarvon, was a member of parliament from 1698 to 1714 and held the office of paymaster general of forces abroad.
The Duke's father, James, 8th Lord Chandos of Sudeley, was ambassador at Constantinople and may have arranged the purchase of the Turk, or he may have been acquired through the Duke's son, the Honourable and Reverend Henry Brydges, a friend of Thomas Darley.
In a letter written from Aleppo in 1705 Thomas informs his brother John that he has requested Henry Brydges to accompany the Darley Arabian to England on the ship Ipswich.
