For instance, the eldest son of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry is the Earl of Dalkeith, even though the Duke is also the Marquess of Dumfriesshire, a senior title to the Earldom of Dalkeith.
Similarly, the eldest son of the Marquess of Londonderry is Viscount Castlereagh, even though the Marquess is also the Earl Vane.
The Duke's son is not the Marquess of Westminster (which would cause confusion between the son and the father), and so is styled Earl Grosvenor instead.

If a peer of the rank of Duke, Marquess or Earl has more than one title, his eldest son, not himself a peer, uses one of the lesser titles; that title is only "loaned" to him - technically the son actually remains a commoner.
For the British peerage, written references to courtesy peers are supposed to be in the form "Marquess of Blandford", "Earl of Arundel", etc., i.e.
The title used does not have to be exactly equivalent to the actual peerage: the eldest son of the current Duke of Wellington uses the title "Marquess of Douro", even though the actual peerage possessed by his father is "Marquess Douro".

The Marquess was mystified by what he had seen, and requested a further demonstration: however, at this, events took place that led to a long-running and bitter disagreement.
The Marquess accused John of being a fraud as he believed that he had substituted the plates, although this was not based on actually seeing such a thing, but simply hearing the sound of glass upon glass.
There is also reference to the Marquess of Donegall's accusation in the second sitting that he had with John, but Fodor says that while this did cast a cloud over John's mediumship, this 'left part of his previous admissions unaffected'.
