In addition, Lord Ely nominated to one seat for the important county town of Wexford, and John and Charles Tottenham of Tottenham Green and New Ross, Co. Wexford, who were brothers and both of whom married sisters of the 1st Earl of Ely, between them nominated to one seat for the borough of New Ross.
It was later, probably c.1806, settled on Lord Robert Ponsonby Tottenham, second son of the 1st Marquess of Ely, Bishop of Killaloe, 1804-1820, of Ferns, 1820-1822, and of Clogher, 1822-1850.
The 1st Marquess of Ely was probably the last to maintain a Dublin town-house, and thereafter the town-house was in London.

The Marquess holds the subsidiary titles of Earl of Ely (1794), Viscount Loftus (1789), Baron Loftus (1785), and Baron Loftus (in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, 1801).
All these titles save the last are in the Peerage of Ireland, and all were created for the same person, making the first Marquess one of the few persons to rise to the rank of Marquess without having inherited any titles.
Before the passage of the House of Lords Act 1999, the Marquess sat in the House of Lords as Baron Loftus.

He was created Marquess of Ely in 1800 and it was his son the 2nd Marquess, John, who set about building what was variously described as an ordinary or small handsome villa where "...the situation is most enchanting and fairly entitled to be called a little Paradise".
This can be explained by the marriage in 1810 of the 2nd Marquess to Anna Maria daughter of Sir H W Dashwood who was a close friend of the 5th Duke of Marlborough and MP for the little town of Woodstock by Blenheim's gates.
Farrell's house was destroyed by explosives in 1870, partly to mark the 21st birthday of the 4th Marquess, and never replaced as intended.
