Charles Paulet, son and heir of John Paulet, the eighth marquess, was created duke of Bolton, on the gth of April 1689, and the marquessate of Winchester remained in connection with the duchy of Bolton (q.v.) till the death of Harry Paulet, sixth duke and eleventh marquess, without male issue in December 1794.
Winchester seems to have reached its zenith of prosperity at the beginning of the i2th century; the first check was given during the civil wars of Stephen's reign, when the city was burned.
Winchester is served by the Baltimore and Ohio and the Cumberland Valley railways.

 William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
He became steward of the bishopric of Winchester, and became a close associate of Cardinal Thomas Wolsey and a friend of Thomas Cromwell.
It was said that Northumberland and Winchester "ruled the court" of the minor King Edward VI, and Winchester was accused of supporting Northumberland's attempts to change the order of succession to the English throne (mainly to secure Lady Jane Grey's position on the throne), although he actually strongly opposed it.
Winchester died, a very old man, at Basing House in 1572, a house that he held to rebuild and fortify.

During the 13th and 14th centuries the Bishops of Winchester collated to the portion or probed of Nuthanger or Ecchinswell which consisted of the tithes proceeding from the demesne lands of the manor.
In 1446 Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester, obtained licence from the Crown to alienate the advowson of the free chapel belonging to his manor of Ecchinswell to the hospital of St. Cross near Winchester.

The Manor of Abbotstone in Itchen Stoke was held by Hugh de Port at the time of the Domesday Survey, and stayed in the same family for seven centuries, finally leaving the descendents of Hugh de Port in the early nineteenth century.
