Marquette Constructors (a consortium made up of Edward Kraemer and Sons, Inc., Plain, Wis.; Lunda Construction Co., Inc., Black River Falls, Wis.; and Zenith Tech, Inc., Waukesha) is the prime contactor for the West Leg construction.
The North Leg of the Marquette Interchange is being reconstructed with 13-inch-thick asphalt pavement, placed in four lifts by Payne and Dolan crews.
Asphalt pavement on the North and West legs of the Marquette Interchange is being built on a three-layer base course because of the low structural support of soils in the Milwaukee area.

 Wisconsin Highways: Milwaukee Freeways: East-West Freeway
This freeway begins at the Lake Interchange on Milwaukee's lakefront which connects with the Lake Freeway heading southerly across the Hoan Bridge and Lincoln Memorial Dr heading northerly in the path of what would have been an extension of the Lake Freeway through Veterans Park, then heads westerly skirting the south side of downtown.
The ramps to and from 6th St through the yet-unfinished Marquette Interchange in downtown Milwaukee were completed in 1966, extending the freeway a short distance farther to the east, with further extension in 1968 when the freeway and ramps to Plankinton Ave was opened to traffic.
In 1995, outspoken Milwaukee Mayor John O. Norquist proposed the I-794 portion of the East-West Freeway from the Marquette Interchange easterly to, and including, the Lake Interchange be removed completely and replaced with a landscaped surface boulevard.

The final acquisition for the interchange project was wrapped up in 1967 when Cutler-Hammer received a sizeable settlement ($3.5 million) for their property.
Indeed, the I-94 freeway from Becher St northerly through the Marquette and westerly past 13th St becomes the last link in I-94 in Wisconsin, allowing motorists to drive on that route from the Illinois state line to the Saint Croix River for the first time, non-stop.
Similarly, the monstrous Marquette Interchange is the final link in both the North-South and the East-West Freeways.

The Marquette Interchange Project has completed its first year on schedule, but according to Brian Manthey, communications officer of the interchange project for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation, this is the time when the challenges start to crop up.
According to www.mchange.org, the Marquette Interchange was originally called the Central Interchange.
The new interchange is a 75-year design, meaning it should be able to accommodate expansions or other changes needed without having to rebuild for the next 75 years.

The Oct. 2001 newsletter, available on the Marquette Interchange web site, is the only place we could find on the web site that identified where the report is available.
