Marrabenta: National Geographic World Music   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
Marrabenta is the rough and tumble urban dance sound that originated in the country's capitol, Maputo (then called Lourenço Marques) in the 1950s.
Marrabenta incorporated a local folk rhythm called the "Majika" into its mix, as well as sea-born foreign sounds like calypso and Angolan pop that were often heard in the port of Maputo.
Early on, marrabenta groups drew the ire of the colonial authorities simply by singing in African languages, instead of the state-approved tongue of Portuguese.

Marrabenta was the rough-edged, urban dance music of Mozambique which emerged in the 50´s.
It became strongly associated with the struggle for independence and was almost completely wiped out (along with Mozambique's music industry) by the bitter civil war, which raged throughout the country during the 80´s.
Accompanied by the controversial social vocals sung in "Ronga" and "Shangana", "Marrabenta" was played on self constructed guitars from fuel canisters and fishing wire, often struck so hard the strings snapped.

There is of course the tendency to explore this facet of the Marrabenta, where the constant encircling of the bodies and the waddling of the hips is essential in the rhythmic expression, giving it that sensuality which gave it its fame, as too with other non-war dances disappearing from their original rural milieus.

Marrabenta, a popular music style from Mozambique, seems to be one of those musics that it's impossible not to move to.
Marrabenta seems to be primarily distinguished by a rapidly repeated guitar figure that's played alongside a thumping 2/4 beat.
The producers of Marrabenta Mozambique clearly put a lot of effort into representing the whole spectrum of the Mozambique marrabenta scene, from the "grand old men" to the newer generations of musicians, and the result is an impressively diverse and lively batch of tracks.

Mabulu: Karimbo - PopMatters Music Review
Marrabenta was invented in urban Mozambique during the colonial period, as musicians tried to adapt foreign musical instruments to their own conditions and materials.
Marrabenta made a comeback in the country in the post-independence period, but the younger urban generation has since developed its own, indigenous form of Western-influenced oppositional music: rap.
The formula for most numbers is for one of the veteran marrabenta vocalists (Antonio Marcos or Lisbao Matavel) to sing, and for the vocals to be punctuated by a rap from Chiquito or a ragga rap from Mr.

Marrabenta is rhythmic dance music intended to express joy and celebration and was, in fact, considered dangerous by the colonial Portuguese authorities.
It is music with a strong grounding in tradition, and like its musical counterparts around the world, marrabenta performers range from the "grand old men" to new young musicians.
There's plenty of contrast, such as that between the laid back "Maria Teresa" from Dilon Djindji, marrabenta's grandest old man, and the heartfelt "Africa" from Nene, the youngest artist represented on the album.

 Orchestra Marrabenta
Orchestra Marrabenta fuse European harmonies with local melodies and rhythms in the usual fashion of modern African bands, but there seems, to my ear, to be less of the specifically Portuguese input in their music, save on the unexpected and lovely ballad
Mostly, Orchestra Marrabenta's music is bright, lively and uptempo, with lyrics that celebrate life's pleasures in a country that has had more than its share of life's horrors; the lineup is two lead guitars, bass, drums, percussion, occasional keyboards, two trumpets and saxophone.
Most of the lead vocals are handled by male singer Wazimbo, who has that high, caressing, immensely sensual sound which, in part at least, descends from the immense popularity of the French singer Tino Rossi during the Belgian colonial era.

Marrabenta is the traditional music of Mozambique, and the group Mabulu sees the coming together of two of Marrabenta's elder statesmen (63-year old Lisboa Matavel, and 73-year old Dilon Djindji) with some of the new stars of Mozambique hip hop to create a fusion called Soul Marrabenta.
The songs tackle a wide range of subjects, including AIDS (which is still a major concern in many African countries), and the floods of 2000; the latter is on a song called "Rosita" named after the baby that was born in a tree which appeared on newscasts throughout the western world.
