Samuel Marsden Missionary New South Wales - Giants of the Missionary Trail by Eugene M. Harrison
Marsden was ordained early in the year 1793 and proceeded to Hull, where he was to take passage in a convict transport, the only conveyance then available for the far distant colony.
Marsden took their first-born son, a promising child two years of age, with her one day in the gig on a round of calls among the sick and suffering.
Marsden was grieved at the forlorn condition of the female convicts who were thrust into frightful immoralities by the current standards of the colony and by the necessity of finding lodging wherever they could.

Marsden, Samuel (1765 - 1838) Biographical Entry - Australian Dictionary of Biography Online   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
MARSDEN, SAMUEL (1765-1838), chaplain, missionary and farmer, was born on 24 June 1765 at Farsley, Yorkshire, England, the son of Thomas Marsden, a flsmith.
Marsden satisfied his English correspondents that 'it was not from inclination' that he and Johnson first accepted Lieutenant-Governor Grose's offer of land, but from the duty to assist the colony to avert the threat of recurring famine.
Marsden found that the subordinates he left in New Zealand, no less than the missionaries he superintended in the South Seas, were very human men and women, peculiarly exposed in their tiny groups to rivalries, quarrels, pecuniary temptations and carnal desires that hindered their higher objectives.
