Topic: Marsh Frog

 Frog
Frogs have three eyelid membranes: one is transparent to protect the eyes underwater, and two vary from translucent to opaque.
Frog populations have declined dramatically since the 1950s, with more than one third of species believed to be threatened with extinction and more than 120 species suspected to have become extinct since the 1980s.
Frogs are used in cloning research and other branches of embryology because frogs are among the closest living relatives of man to lack egg shells characteristic of most other vertebrates, and therefore facilitate observations of early development.

The edible frog is closely related to the marsh frog, and similarly spends most of its time in the water, or basking on the edge of waterbodies.

The Marsh Frog is tolerant of high water salinity (it occurs in waters of salinity 0.9-8.3 parts per thousand), and in some places reproduces near the western shore in the Caspian Sea.
Marsh Frog adults, being the largest frogs in Europe, often eat conspecific and other amphibians, as well as reptiles and even small birds and rodents.
In general, the Marsh Frog seems to be in the safest situation among the amphibians of Eurasia.

 Marsh Frog - Rana Ridibunda
The three introduced species of water frog may be difficult to positively identify without capture, the marsh frog has a proportionally longer heal to the hind leg, which when extended along the body reaches the tip of the snout.
However, the marsh frog is a voracious predator and further spread of this species in the UK is inadvisable due to unknown impact on native herpetofauna, and illegal under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
Male marsh frog croaking, note the grey appearance of the inflated vocal sacs, a useful aid to identification of this species.

The Ground frogs are a large group of terrestrial species with comparatively narrow digits which vary in size from the species of Uperoleia and Crinia of body length 30 mm to large robust species in the genera Limnodynastes and Mixophyes which reach a length of 80 mm or more.
The remaining species of Ground Frogs no longer commonly occur around the Harbour and the last Museum records for several species from the southern shores are from the early part of the twentieth century.
Two of the species of Ground Frog that were probably widespread in sandstone habitat around the Harbour are the Giant Burrowing Frog Heleioporus australiacus, and Red-crowned Toadlet, Pseudophryne australis.
