The western sandpiper was selected by the Suisun Ecological Workgroup Wildlife Committee for evaluation as a representative of small-bodied, short-legged, and small-billed stints found in the Suisun Marsh.
The western sandpiper breeding grounds are on the western coastal plain of Alaska and as far as northeastern Siberia.
The prey base for western sandpipers is primarily insects during the breeding season and almost entirely aquatic invertebrates during the nonbreeding season.

The Marsh Sandpiper is only three-quarters the size of a Greenshank and the best recognition feature in flight is the strong contrast between the white rump and the uniform dark upper surfaces of the wings.
The Common Sandpiper is easiest to recognise by its flickering flight, usually low over the water, as it flies with hesitant wing beats and glides for short periods with the wings held bowed downwards at the bottom of the downstroke.

The small marsh around the dam is worth searching for Common Waxbill, Orangebreasted Waxbill, Red Bishop and Golden Bishop.
Warblers are common in the reeds, sedges and weeds, and of particular interest is Eurasian Marsh Warbler at the edges of pans or thickets in grassland or woodland under storey away from water.

Nesting grounds range from moorlands with scattered trees, clearings in coniferous forests, forest marshes dotted with large and small lakes, or treeless upland bogs up to 5,000ft.

About 300 of the sandpipers could be studied comfortably from within 25 yards as the birds quickly became accustomed to me after some initial lift-offs.
As expected the shorebird population was quite small at Ottawa NWR and at Medusa Marsh on 27 July.
On the entry road there were least, semipalmated, solitary(2) and pectoral sandpipers, greater and lesser yellowlegs, killdeer and semipalmated plovers, all in small numbers.

May is also a good month for raptors with Marsh Harriers often passing through and Ospreys, Montagu’s Harriers and Hobbies may put in an appearance.
The only birds of note in the first week of the month were Wood Sandpipers at Saltholme and Coatham Marsh, up to 4 Little Gulls at Dormans Pool and up to 12 Black-tailed Godwit on the North Tees Marshes.
Up to 3 Curlew Sandpipers were present at this time and another Avocet was on Saltholme Marsh (15th) later moving to Dormans Pool and Coatham Marsh.

We visited Spectacle Lake which has shrunk to about one-third its winter size, where there were a few waders, Marsh Sandpiper, Greenshank and Sharp-tailed Sandpiper plus Black-tailed Native Hen and Australian Shelduck.
These were predominately Curlew Sandpiper and Red-necked Stint with a few Sharpies and Red Knot.
Amongst this throng was one Broad-billed Sandpiper (I apologise to the Melbourne and Victorian birders for not posting this earlier, but I only discovered the rarity value of this sighting yesterday).

I then found this juvenile YELLOW WAGTAIL on the far side of the marsh, i was very pleased with this as we dont get many on the marsh, & this was the first one i have seen in Devon this year.
In luck again it came into the marsh late again but it didn`t stay long as it was flushed out again by the local train going by, but better views obtained today as it was on the near side of the marsh as to yesterdays far side views.
On arriving there i quickly got on to the bird, after a while i got good views of the bird but it didn`t show well for long periods as it was out of view behind all the other waders.

Kenya: Passage migrant which is common from September through to April in all areas with water including the coast.
A somewhat slender looking Sandpiper with a fine straight bill which looks rather like a small Common Greenshank.
It is found singly or in small groups, wading along the water's edge picking at the surface.

Spotted Redshank, Marsh Sandpiper, Common Greenshank, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper, Curlew Sandpiper, Black-winged Stilt, Pied Avocet and Kentish Plover) were significantly under-counted.
Saltpans are of great importance to Marsh Sandpipers, with all but a handful of the birds recorded being found in such habitat.
This confirms the observation from last year's survey in Yancheng National Nature Reserve, when almost 7,000 Marsh Sandpipers were counted in saltpans in the north of the Reserve.
