The Tit or titmouse is a family of small, rather long-tailed, arboreal birds (Paridae), of which seven species occur in Great Britain.
Of these, the blue tit (Parus coeruleus), often known as the tomtit, is the best known, a little bird measuring 10 cm in length, with a blue crown, white cheeks, greenish back, blue wings and tail, and a white breast crossed by a blue line.
The long-tailed tit (Acredula caudata) is one of the smallest of British birds.

Facts about marsh tit   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The Marsh Tit, Poecile palustris, (formerly Parus palustris) is a passerine bird in the tit family Paridae.
The wings and tail are greyish, and there is a clear bar on the former, a further distinction from the Coal Tit.
"Marsh Tit" is a misleading rather than incorrect name, for though the bird is found in damp and marshy places, it is as common in dry woods and hedgerows and even occurs in gardens.

 Marsh Tit, Parus palustris
Not until the turn of the century was the willow tit recognised as distinct from the marsh tit in this country.
Like all tits, the willow tit is very active when feeding, flitting constantly from twig to twig, searching for insects often among low bushes but also high in conifers, birch and alders.
Willow tits favour conifers and marshy spots or the vicinity of water.

The Marsh Tit is a small and rather plain looking member of the Tit family, difficult to separate from the similar Willow Tit without experience.
Marsh Tits do not excavate their own nest hole in the same way as Willow Tits, but they will enlarge natural cavities to some extent and they will also take over sites excavated by Willow Tits.
Intriguingly, Marsh Tits do not take readily to nestboxes, something that may be due to competition with other tit species.

Marsh Tit abundance has declined rapidly, despite improvements in breeding performance (nest failure rates at the egg stage (22 days, comprising 15 days incubation + 7 days laying) have fallen from 17% to 4%).
Detailed demographic work at the BTO suggests that the decline may have been driven by low annual survival and that increased nest predation and inter-specific competition are not responsible (G.M. Siriwardena, unpubl.).

Both parents shew a very affectionate disposition towards their family, and the members of the latter to each other, so that if one is caught, and placed in a cage, the others come to it, and may be captured likewise.
Small flocks of six or eight may be seen together in the autumn—probably the members of the family which the summer has produced.

Gradually the two species were unravelled and it was realised that the Marsh Tit bred through most of England except Cumberland and there were few records from Scotland.

 Parus montanus
The Willow Tit is so similar to the Marsh Tit that it wasn't recognised as a separate species until 1900.
Unlike the Marsh Tit, it excavates its own nest hole so it needs a strong head and neck, as well as the soft timber which is found in damp woodland and willow carr.
This explains why the Willow Tit looks thicker-necked than the Marsh Tit.
