NEW YORK -- Marsh & McLennan is slashing 3,000 jobs and may need to undergo further downsizing as the world's biggest insurance broker struggles to rebound from a damaging bid-rigging scandal.
Marsh CEO Michael Cherkasky, who took the turnaround job two weeks ago, said in a conference call with analysts Tuesday that more staff cuts may be necessary as the company seeks to "right-size our business depending on our revenue."
Marsh blamed the dismal performance on the need for a $232 million reserve to settle regulatory charges, a higher tax rate and a decline in controversial commissions from insurers.
