Thurgood Marshall was the great-grandson of a slave and the son of a dining car waiter and a schoolteacher.
Marshall graduated first in his class from Howard in 1933, and he was drafted by Houston to help with the civil rights battles then being waged by the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
Marshall believed that the Constitution was inherently defective in its acceptance of slavery and gave much credit to those who "refused to acquiesce in outdated notions of 'liberty,' 'justice,' and 'equality,' and who worked to better them.

Born in Baltimore, Maryland on July 2, 1908, Marshall graduated with honors from Lincoln University and received his law degree from Howard University in 1933, ranking first in his class.
Marshall spent nearly twenty-five years on the Court continuing to play a leading role in the legal fight to end racial discrimination in America by working to solidify the Brown decision and other civil rights victories through a series of judicial remedies.

In August of 2002, Brown and DNR Law Enforcement Ranger Richard Burnette, 57, of Dudley were fired after an internal investigation into charges of illegal hunting and allowing illegal hunting on a 2,000-acre tract on the Oconee River in Laurens County belonging to Claude Graham.
Marshall Brown, the son of retired DNR Law Enforcement Col. Joel Brown, hired an attorney and is fighting his firing.
The administrative hearing in Marshall Brown’s case was held at the Laurens County courthouse in Dublin, and it began on Thursday morning, December 5.
