Marshall County is near the northeastern corner of the Mississippi Embayment Region of western Kentucky.
Highest elevations are found on the flat-topped ridges between the principal drainage lines and range from 550 feet in the southern part of the county to 450 feet in the northern part.

The county was once part of the Chickasaw Indian lands acquired in the Jackson Purchase of October 19, 1818.
From 1818 to 1822, the area that is now Marshall County was part of Hickman County; from 1822 to 1842 it was the northern part of Calloway County.
The population of the rural county was 20,381 in 1970; 25,637 in 1980; and 27,205 in 1990.
