Two years later, in 1968, Nirenberg received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for "interpretation of the genetic code and its function in protein synthesis." He shared the award with Robert W. Holley of Cornell University and Har Gobind Khorana of the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

Nirenberg's thesis, performed under the guidance of Dr. James Hogg, was a study of a permease for hexose transport in ascites tumor cells.
Nirenberg holds honorary degrees from the University of Michigan, Yale University, University of Chicago, University of Windsor (Ontario) and Harvard University.

Marshall Nirenberg was born in New York city, but, when he was ten years old, his family moved to Orlando, Florida.
But in 1964 Nirenberg announced that he and Philip Leder had devised a new and more powerful decoding technique, and within a year the code was fully deciphered.
However, Nirenberg and Leder found that RNA chains just three base units long (single codons, in effect), which could be made with bases in a specific order, would cause tRNA carrying the appropriate amino acid to stick fast to the ribosomes.

 Molecular Biology
An important breakthrough came in 1961 when biochemists Marshall Nirenberg and J. Heinrich Matthaei, at the (US) National Institutes of Health (NIH), discovered that a unique sequence of nucleic acid bases could be read to produce a unique amino acid product (Nirenberg and Matthaei 1961; for discussion, see Judson 1996; Kay 2000).
With the genetic code elucidated and the relationship between genes and their molecular products traced, it seemed in the late 1960s that the concept of the gene was secure in its connection between gene structure and gene function.
Nirenberg used neuroblastomas (malignant tumors composed of undifferentiated neurons) as a model system to study the development of neural tissue (for an online exhibit of Nirenberg's transition to neurobiology, see the National Library of Medicine's Profiles in Science study of Nirenberg, The Marshall W. Nirenberg Papers).

Khorana was born into a poor family and attended Punjab University at Lahore and the University of Liverpool, England, on government scholarships.
In the 1960s Khorana confirmed Nirenberg's findings that the way the four different types of nucleotides are arranged on the spiral “staircase” of the DNA molecule determines the chemical composition and function of a new cell.
The 64 possible combinations of the nucleotides are read off along a strand of DNA as required to produce the desired amino acids, which are the building blocks of proteins.

 Nirenberg & Matthaei
Note: We were unable to find Nirenberg and Matthaei's 1961 paper but we did find a 1963 paper that Nirenberg wrote about his experiments in 1961 and some of his follow-up experiments.
Along with mRNA, it was thought that another form of RNA acted as an "adaptor molecule" to bring the amino acids to the proper sites on the mRNA.
At the time, the tRNA was thought to be a special helical form of RNA transporting the amino acids.
