Marshfield was incorporated March 2, 1640; and was probably named with reference to the character of the surface where the first settlement was made.
Marshfield furnished 210 men for the Union forces in the late war, and lost 25.
Attracted by the abundance of trout in the cold streams, and the sea-fowl which visit the shore and marshes, the eloquent Daniel Webster came to Marshfield for recreation as early as 1827; and some five years later he became a resident.

The records show that Colonel Isaac Marsh of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, presented a bill of sale from eighteen Mohawks (then living in New Stockbridge, New York) to prove that he had paid £140 for the grant on in July, 1789.
Colonel Marsh asked to have the grant confirmed to him under the name Marshfield, and to have it reassigned for the land in Vermont where the town is now.
However, he was one of the proprietors listed in the Marshfield grant, so apparently the family had sorted out the matter for themselves.

Daniel Webster, who was Secretary of State to three American presidents, first visited Marshfield on a hunting and fishing holiday in 1828 and, in 1832, bought his home on Webster Street from John Thomas.
Daniel Webster died on October 24, 1852, at his home in Marshfield after falling from his horse and suffering a crushing blow to the head, his condition complicated by cirrhosis of the liver, which resulted in a brain hemorrhage.
The first attempt to cross the Atlantic in a hot air balloon in 1977 was made by the "Double Eagle" which rose from the sand pit on Forest Street but only made it to Iceland.

 The North River Community Lions Club
The North River Community Lions Club was organized January 18, 1960, as the Lions Club of Marshfield (Massachusetts), and was chartered by Lions Clubs International with that name on March 19, 1960.
Over the years, those clubs disbanded, but the club in Marshfield continued on and its membership gradually begain to encompass men and women from all four towns.
Lions’ main charity is sight conservation; in Massachusetts, Lions support and enable the work of the Massachusetts Lions Eye Research Fund, Inc. Lions are men and women, 18 years of age and older, who have decided to give something back to their community.
