Located in the northeast part of Washington County, the 44 square mile town of Marshfield is bisected by the fertile valley of the Winooski River on its 88-mile run to Lake Champlain.
Marshfield, like the majority of Vermont towns, suffered rural de-population beginning in the 1830s, and by 1950 the population had declined to only 830.
Marshfield Village was incorporated in 1911 where residents constructed a sewage system, street lighting, and a fire station with an organized volunteer fire department.

The central Vermont town was one of 52 communities in this famously liberal state to add a vote on a nonbinding antiwar resolution to the agenda of annual town meetings held Tuesday.
Towns have lost police officers, firefighters, teachers and other vital employees, said Benson Scotch of Montpelier, who set up a website, http://www.iraqresolution.org, to promote the measure.
With votes in more than half of the towns counted late Tuesday, at least 37 towns voted to accept the resolution, three declined to consider it, three voted it down, and in one town, the vote was tied.

Since they were childless, they willed this town $7,000, with all but $1,000 to be used to build and support a library in the village.

In 1805, a committee was appointed by the town to act in concert with the selectmen in purchasing a piece of ground for the burial of the dead, and the grave-yard near J. Eaton's was bought of Nathaniel Dodge.
March 1797, Thomas McLoud, of Montpelier, and Sally Dodge, of Marshfield, were united in marriage by Joseph Wing, Esq.; of Montpelier, the first marriage in town.
Dodge, the father, started East, came to Vermont, and when he returned was accompanied by two handsome young ladies, and very soon after his arrival home, had the satisfaction of seeing his sons both married to Vermont girls.
