LUPIA, R., H. PRYER, and P.R. Marsileaceae sporocarps and spores from the Late Cretaceous of Georgia, U.S.A. International Journal of Plant Sciences 161: 975-988.
Monomegasporangy (single megaspore/megasporangium) is assumed to be one of the key innovations in the evolution of seed plants.
On the basis of shared morphological features of the sporocarp wall structure, and in situ megaspore and microspore ultrastructure and ornamentation, these specimens are assigned to the water fern family, Marsileaceae.

Marsileaceae radiated first and was the dominant heterosporous fern in the Early Cretaceous.
Salviniaceae began to overtake Marsileaceae in species richness in the Late Cretaceous and was the most species-rich heterosporous fern group throughout most of the Cenozoic.
In all, approximately 200 extinct species of heterosporous ferns are preserved in the fossil record, mostly in the form of microfossils with a remarkable diversity of ornamented spores.

The Marsileaceae have an amphibious habit, whereas the Salviniaceae are exclusively floating aquatics.
The megaspores of Marsileaceae are dispersed freely into water and possess an ephemeral gelatinous outer perine that acts as a flexible floating apparatus.
As with the megaspores, the microspores of Marsileaceae are freely released in water and possess a gelatinous perine layer, whereas, the microspores of Salviniaceae are retained in massulae (Azolla), or within the microsporangium (Salvinia).

Marsileales - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ferns of this order vary radically in form from one another and do not look particularly fern-like.
Species of the families Azollaceae and Salviniaceae are natant (floating), while those of the family Marsileaceae are rooted.
However, the natant species may temporarily grow on wet mud during times of low water, and the Marsileaceae may grow as emergent species, depending on species and location.

HETEROSPOROUS FERNS: PHYLOGENY, ORIGIN AND RADIATION
The leptosporangiate fern families Marsileaceae (Marsilea, Pilularia, Regnellidium) and Salviniaceae (Azolla and Salvinia) represent the most recent acquisition of heterospory—production of separate male gametophytes in microspores and female gametophytes in megaspores.
Read directly from the fossil record, the first appearance of heterosporous ferns reliably dates to the earliest Cretaceous and their radiation is broadly coincident with the radiation of flowering plants and derived ferns.
This date is consistent with macrofossil records of Marsileaceae, the first of which (Regnellites) occurs in the Berriasian.

The family Marsileaceae is a clearly delineated one, containing three clearly delineated genera.
Recent research has indicated that the three groups probably belong in the same order, with the heterospory commonly derived as an adaptation to the aquatic environment.
Chromosome counts in the family Marsileaceae appear to be based on n=10, which is probably a reduction from n=11.

The monophyly of the heterosporous ferns (Azollaceae, Salviniaceae, and Marsileaceae) is the most strongly supported result from all analyses in Pryer et al.
In some early classifications, Salviniaceae, Azollaceae, and Marsileaceae were maintained as separate orders within the leptosporangiate ferns.
In other classifications, the families were segregated as the order Hydropteridales, to emphasize the fact that they are aquatic and heterosporous.

Species of Marsileaceae are mostly colonizers of open, aquatic habitats.
As such, populations may appear and disappear sporadically as succession occurs in the ponds and lakes whose shores they inhabit.
